The Bloomfield group is the only Australian family owned coal mine in Australia.
There are many benefits to this continuation project as it will provide royalties to the state for a further 10 years, taxation benefits to the state from employees, contractors, suppliers and other services. Also will allow the continuation to support charities and local services and upgrades to the local community and economy.
The continuation project will also allow for better rehabilitation and reduced final void allowing for a better and more productive final product.

A five-year extension provides continued economic benefit for the State Government via royalties and taxes paid.
Continued support will also be available to local community organisations supported by The Bloomfield Group Foundation.
From the late 1850s, mining has been carried out at the Bloomfield Site. A successful extension will result in beneficial changes to the currently approved post mining landform by reducing the size of the final void and reducing rehabilitated slope angles, which benefit the final land use (cattle grazing).

My name is Mark Nolan and I am employed at Bloomfield Colliery and as an Opencut Examiner. I have been employed here for the last 34 years. I wish to make a submission to lend my support to the Mod 5 application for the extension to mining at Bloomfield Colliery.
The modification is beneficial to the mine, the local community of the lower Hunter, the state of NSW and Australia. It has provided continuous employment for all the company employees, contractors and supply companies. Royalities will be collected by the State Government and taxation will be collected by the Federal Government. These taxes are important for the funding of all essential services as well as critical infrastructure projects.
The company also contributes greatly the local community through the Bloomfield Group Foundation which will continue with the extension approval period if accepted.
The modification also gives the benefit of an improved final landform in that it will reduce the size of the final void. It also gives the opportunity to address some legacy issues on the site. Some very shallow underground workings will also be mined and rehabilitated thereby reducing the risk of subsidence and improving the long-term stability of the final landform.
Specialist technical studies have been completed indicating that the continuation of operations can meet the requirement for air quality, noise and blasting. A biodiversity offset strategy also addresses the ecological impacts associated with the disturbance of vegetation.
Bloomfield Colliery has always been a good neighbor to surrounding residents and this will continue. Importantly, the modification involves no increase in production levels.
I can see no reason why this modification should not be approved. It is in the best interests of not only its employees but contractors, suppliers, the local community as well as both state and federal governments. The Bloomfield Group is a privately owned company operating for the past 88 years. This extension to mining would be considered very small in comparison to Hunter Valley Standards but would make a huge impact to many. I look forward to hearing a positive outcome in this matter.

In a time where many people are struggling to find stable and rewarding employment, this project will provide opportunities to many local community members through the company's apprenticeship program, graduate programs, and professional development opportunities available to employees.
Aside from the many direct financial and social benefits that the mine provides, I am proud to have the Bloomfield Group as a part of my community because of the work it does in terms of support and sponsorship of local community and charitable organisations through the Bloomfield Foundation.

As a local resident living less the 10 km from the mine I have received no noise dust or vibration disturbances over the past 10 years living in east Maitland.
The plan to mine old underground workings from the 1850s would increase the safety of the area and is surrounds from mine subsidence.

Community investments: Continued mining will mean ongoing investment in the many community organisations Bloomfield supports in the local area through The Bloomfield Group Foundation.
Improved final landform: The proposed modification would result in beneficial changes to the currently approved post mining landform by reducing the size of the final void and reducing rehabilitated slope angles, which benefit the final land use (cattle grazing).
Opportunity to address legacy matters associated with the site: Mining has been carried out at the site since the late 1850s. This project provides the opportunity to mine an area of shallow historic underground workings, thereby removing the potential for subsidence and voids to occur at the surface and providing improved long term stability benefits for the final landform.
Results of key studies
As part of preparing the EIS, a series of specialist technical studies were completed, indicating that the continuation of operations can be undertaken and managed to meet the requirements for air quality, noise and blasting.
A biodiversity offset strategy will also address the ecological impacts associated with the disturbance of
vegetation.
In addition to the NSW Government approval required for the modification, the project also requires Commonwealth Government approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC).

Employment and economic benefits for the local community, the State of NSW, and Australia: Continued mining will mean ongoing employment for our employees, contractors and supply companies. There will be additional taxation payable to both the State and Commonwealth Governments from the additional years of mining. Royalties will also be paid to the State on the additional resource that will be mined. These royalties contribute to funding NSW hospitals, schools, essential services, and infrastructure projects.
