Bloomfield Colliery has been a valuable and positive contributor to the social fabric of the Lower Hunter Valley.
It has provided royalties and taxes to people of New South Wales and the Commonwealth of Australia, allowing the funding of hospitals, schools, roads and other essential services.
The colliery has provided long term employment and generous local support; lifting the standard of living for many families in the Maitland, Cessnock and Newcastle communities.
The continuation of Bloomfield Colliery will allow these overwhelmingly positive outcomes to continue well into the next decade, while leaving a rehabilitated site that will be far superior in appearance and ongoing land use than would otherwise be the case.
Bloomfield Colliery should be granted approval to continue mining for the benefit of the Lower Hunter Community and the people of New South Wales.

My name is Neville Jukes, and I was the Managing Director of PJ Welding Pty Limited for 45 years, having
recently retired due to health reasons. I speak from the heart when I say I am deeply passionate about The
Bloomfield Group and what they represent.
The Bloomfield Group has supported my family and my business for over 50 years. During particularly
difficult times, when PJ Welding was reduced to its “bare bones” and close to shutting down, Bloomfield
consistently stepped in with enough work to help us stay afloat. Their ongoing support has been instrumental
to our survival.
Today, PJ Welding employs over 20 people, including some who have been with us for more than 40 years,
as well as newer members of the team. When a local company went into receivership several years ago,
some of their former employees came to us seeking work. In an effort to give them stability, I reached out to
Bloomfield, who responded by providing additional work to help us bring them on board. Without that
support, many of those individuals may have ended up reliant on unemployment benefits.
We feel a strong obligation to our long-term staff—many of whom would struggle to find alternative
employment due to their age. The continuation of mining at Bloomfield would provide them with the
opportunity to work with dignity through to retirement.
Several of our employees have spent their entire working lives servicing The Bloomfield Group—from
apprenticeships to middle age. Their livelihoods depend almost entirely on the continuation of work at
Bloomfield Mine.
Two of our apprentices have gone on to win the Hunter Valley Apprentice of the Year award, thanks in part
to the diverse and valuable experience, they gained working with Bloomfield. The company’s strong focus
on safety, training, and environmental awareness has helped us raise the standard of all the tradespeople
we’ve trained.
Beyond business, The Bloomfield Group is a shining example of corporate citizenship. They support vital
community initiatives, including the Hunter Medical Research Institute—a cause close to my heart, as both
my wife and I are cancer survivors. They also support the Salvation Army, Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off
the Streets, Steamfest, and numerous other local organisations.
I’ll never forget a story shared at the funeral of Bloomfield’s Managing Director. The minister revealed that
Bloomfield had made a significant donation to help restore Christ Church Cathedral after the 1989
earthquake—on the condition that it remain anonymous. That’s the kind of integrity this company has: they
help quietly, without seeking recognition.
The decision regarding this mining lease extension will have a profound impact on many families—
including my own. PJ Welding alone affects more than 100 people when you count employees and their
families. And when you consider the broader network of Bloomfield employees, contractors, and the ripple
effect on local businesses, you’re looking at thousands of lives.
This is not just about economics—it’s about people. Bloomfield is a proudly Australian-owned company. Its
profits and taxes stay in Australia. These are not foreign investors, but people who live and work among us,
who’ve shown time and time again their commitment to the community.
For the sake of our families, our employees, and our region, I wholeheartedly support the Bloomfield Mine
extension and urge its approval. Let’s ensure that future generations can be part of the Bloomfield legacy.
Kind regards,
Neville Jukes

I support the Bloomfield continuation project for a number of reasons. The continued mining will mean ongoing employment for Bloomfield employees, numerous contractors and supply companies that are located in the local community and national companies.
Approval to continue mining will mean ongoing investment in the many communities' organisations Bloomfield supports in the local area through The Bloomfield Group Foundation. Bloomfield is a proud Australian owned company and takes pride in supporting the local communities it is a part of. Also, the royalties contribute to funding NSW hospitals, schools, essential services, and infrastructure projects.
Environmental impact will be reduced with the improvement of the final landform by reducing the size of the final void and reducing rehabilitated slope angles, which benefit the final land use (cattle grazing). plus, the future benefits of the land become more usable once mining is completed. This approval will allow to address legacy matters associated with the site: Mining has been carried out at the site since the late 1850s. The project provides the opportunity to mine an area of shallow historic underground workings, thereby removing the potential for subsidence and voids to occur at the surface and providing improved long term stability benefits for the final landform.
These are just some of the points why I support the Bloomfield colliery continuation project.
Regards,
Mark Gordon

The Bloomfield Group has been heavily involved with the Hunter's numerous charities that help members of our communities of Maitland and the surrounding Hunter Valley, who are vulnerable and most in need.
They are also progressive in addressing diversity and inclusivity within their workforce, which offers employment paths to all the youth of our local area.
This Continuation project allows the present and future workforce to continue to maintain focus on working with the local community and returning the land ready for final land use by reducing the final void size. The Bloomfield group will also be able to address legacy issues that have or may arise from previous works in that area.
By allowing this proud Australian company the Modification 5 project approval, they can continue a recognised tradition of The Bloomfield Group working hand in hand with their local communities in many beneficial ways. Knowing this, I am fully supportive of this project's approval.
