Penalty Notice issued to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (SSD-6465, Singleton Shire LGA)

On 13 August 2021, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Mt Thorley Pty Ltd (Mt Thorley) for failing to ensure that no mine water is discharged from the Mt Thorley Warkworth mine complex.  A rainfall event on 4-6 January 2021 resulted in a mine water dam overtopping and mine water discharging from site.  An investigation by the Department concluded that Mt Thorley failed to design and maintain the mine water dams to comply with water management performance measures. Mt Thorley has committed to reviewing their water management infrastructure and their Water Management Plan to ensure no mine water is discharged from site.

I support any project that support jobs. This project will continue to allow 1300 workers and their families to live in the Hunter Valley.

With economic conditions as they are, any project that helps with employment should be allowed to continue.

I support the MTW extension for several reasons as listed below:
1. Mining is a fundamental industry underpinning this great country we live in and we need mining to help maintain the wonderful lifestyle we enjoy in Australia.
2. I support mining jobs in Singleton and surrounds, a town with a proud history of mining and a strong future if the MTW extension proceeds.
3. There have already been too many job losses in mining over the past 12 months and this extension should be approved to secure employment for 1300+ people that rely on these mines for their income and to support their families.
4. I support the economic benefits that mining brings to the Hunter Valley and the state. The MTW extension will spend over $6 billion of which $567 million will be provided to the state in royalties.
5. I work in the mining industry and I and my family depend on a strong and growing mining industry. Whilst I live in Queensland, over half my work and income comes out of NSW which includes MTW. I and my work team depend in part on MTW for the security of their future employment, and without the extension, job losses will extend into my team as well.

I Paul Harris have been a resident of Bulga fo 53 years I can't belive we have to try and defend our homes , village and quality of life in a rural area from rio tinto again where do I start possibly with dust it would have to be the worst we have had this dust is on our roof and of course washed into our drinking water when it rains we have to change water filters on a very regular basis then we run it through a stone filter to have good drinking water also the dust settles on our solar panels it drops the production of electricity if not cleaned .the mine have so much open country they can't control the dust also shots have increasedto up to 3 shots a day all create dust .noise is constant 24 hrs a day 365 days a year and getting closer they rio tipto tell us they have real time monitor but it always takes a phone call to get them to do somthing . Blasting is also affecting our homes how can it not with up to 3 shots a day and we do feel them if we can feel them it got to be slowly destroying our home. Our homes are losing value as this mine gets closer so how will it be on our door step. We have lost ravensworth, warkworth village and we as a community don't want to see Bulga disappear . Bulga is the gateway to the hunter from Sydney not much of a gate way if rio tinto get there expansion.they keep talking about jobs they will disappear if coal prices fall .

I am a employee of Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW) and a Singleton resident. I support the continuation of Mount Thorley as it is critical to the running of the whole MTW operation. MTW as a whole employs 1300 people and generates hundreds of millions of dollars to the local economy. With the recent downturn in mining Singleton is suffering - businesses are noticeably empty, lots of houses are for sale and prices have dropped as people have left town. If Mount Thorley is not continued 1300 people face the likelihood of losing their jobs. I know that if I lose my job I will have to leave the area, and I'm sure a lot of others will too. There will also be the loss of investment in local businesses. I'm concerned how this will not only impact Singleton, but the greater Hunter community. I don't believe Singleton and surrounds can afford to lose any more mines.

This application makes good sense, the mine is already developed and in operation, it would be sinful not to grant approval so the full life of the asset can be extracted due to a significant flooding event back in 2007.

The Mount Thorley operation offers gainful employment to 121 people and makes significant contributions to the local area and government. This employment and revenue is critical to the local community especially in these difficult times, where other mine are shutting down, ramping down production with significant number of people losing their jobs. As an employee at Mount Thorley, I know this is a good business and operating team who manage the environmental/local community impacts to the highest level practical following the consent conditions.

Please approve the Mount Thorley project continuation.

As a resident of Bulga village the town that will disappear if this project is approved I must strongly appose the Mount Thorley continuation.
History is recorded to be learned from not repeated and we have learned that MTW cannot stay within their consent levels at a distance of 3.5Km away that's how close they are. They are regularly over their noise levels and it is impossible for them to control the dust leaving their site now. With the added dumping happening at Mt Thorley, an area my property overlooks it would be impossible to enjoy a beautiful morning on the eastern side of my house on the veranda over looking my large dam. It is already impossible to sell a house at my end of town, due to the aspect we have over looking the dumps of MT Thorley.
Blasting already shakes thing from walls and shelves. It is damaging houses by shaking them about enough to wake you if your sleeping after night shift and cracking ceilings and walls
You could not in good conscience allow this extention to go ahead, if you do you are a heart animal. the land and environment court put a stop to it for many a good reason none of the information or modelling is correct. The governments decision to help them by modifying the SEPP is nothing short of corrupt as has been proven by ICAC recently. It is these reasons I object.

The Warkworth continuation is vital for not only the 1300 people involved but the wider community and supporting businesses. Since the down turn in the industry Singleton has gone from a area where there was not enough housing for rent or sale to an area which is flooded with rental and ownership opportunities. This affects everyone down to the local store of which at least 4 have closed in the last 6 months leaving another 20 families out of work. This is only from a down turn. I can only imagine what 1300 families out of work will do to Singleton and Surrounding communities like Muswellbrook, Denman, Scone and will affect as far as Gosford and Newcastle areas.
The local sporting clubs rely on companies like MTW to for sponsorship, ensuring the kids have a safe environment in which to enjoy their junior sporting careers. A loss of those support will be devastating for all involved.

I support the Mt Thorley continuation project. 2 people in my immediate family are employed by MTW. Loss of employement would mean relocating to look for work. This would negatively impact many businesses in the Hunter Valley and result in more job losses and unemployment.
