Centennial's Northern Coal Logistics along with its northern mines (Mandalong, Newstan and Myuna) will continue to support a local workforce of over 500 employees and potentially over 1,000 when/if Newstan re-opens.

Centennial has a good track record of operating in our local area with minimal impacts to the people that live here and the local environment. I was also involved with helping Centennial coal install the new treatment plant at the Newstan site and this is a bench mark project for not only the water industry but it shows how much of a leader Centennial coal is in the industry. This was great project not only for Centennial but for the local environment as well.

Centennial plays a big part in supplying coal for local electricity generation.

I support the upgrade and continuation of the Centennial proposal. Being a electrician that works for a company that already provides conveyor systems to Centennial, this future works would greatly enhance the viability of my future employment. These proposed projects would give my work peers and myself the ability to continue working in a industry that is really struggling at the present.

I support this project as it will help keep jobs in the region, as I have friends that have been made redundant due to the reduction of mining jobs in the hunter valley and there job was not directly related to mining, but is indirectly affected due to these people no longer have the money to spend in the local area.

The project should proceed based upon the substantial and positive economic and social benefits that it will provide to the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle areas of NSW.

If the Northern Coal project was to go ahead it would be ideal for me in my line of work. I was part of the Centennial system for 9 years working at the original Cooranbong mine. It was the best working experience in the sense of community, friendship and life style stability. It would generate growth on the Central Coast, Newcastle area.
The coast mines have always been a part of the wider community and will assist in regrowing the area and secure more jobs within that local community.

I have lived in Killingworth since 1987 and prior to that have lived in the Lake Macquarie area all my life. My father and grandfather have been employees of the Newstan mine as has my husband. Centennial's Northern Coal Logistics has done and will continue to support a local workforce of more than 500 employees. I have been involved in 3 generations of coal mining and Newstan in particular has been a constant and reliable employer throughout the generations supporting a consistent way of life for myself and my family. By supporting this project, Centennial will continue to support local families and businesses in the area by means of employment with minimal impact to the environment. The wages generated by employees will continue to support local businesses enabling a flow on effect to filter down through other community members. Centennial has been and continues to be a major supplier of coal to the power station for local electricity generation and with this new project can continue to support our local area for another 3 generations to come.

The current impact on the mining sector has affected my employer significantly as a supplier to Centennial Coal. The approval of this project has the potential to help turn things around for both my employer and I.

The impact on me personally is reduced income and increased job insecurity. In turn this has led me reducing my spending substantially within the community as a result.

The lack of confidence around the Newcastle area is there for all to see. Centennial Coal has been a large contributor in helping to provide that confidence through both their employees and contractors. This project may be the catalyst to restoring confidence.

The economic benefits to the local community are extremely important in these times.

Centennial Coal has been an excellent corporate citizen in the Lake Macquarie (and Lithgow) area.

I believe this project should proceed in a timely fashion.

I currently work at Newstan Coal Preparation Plant and if this application is not approved my employment is uncertain. If I lose my job it not only effects my personal financial future but the flow on will effect all business owners in the area due to no money being available to spend on everyday goods including food, schools, suppliers to the mines etc. Everyone in Lake Macquarie and Newcastle will be effected.
I have worked in the mining industry for 30 years and have found that Centennials commitment to the environment to be the strongest I have seen. The environment and safety are always first priority in all work being conducted.
Centennial also has a huge commitment to supporting and communicating with the local community.
I strongly support the application and feel not only the local community will benefit from it, but whole state will benefit.

As a business owner in this area we will NOT survive if this project does not go ahead. We have a lot of people working in the mine industry who support our business as does the mine itself. They help out the community with sponsorship for our kids & adults sporting teams. They have a good track record of operating in our area with minimal impact to the people or environment. Please allow this to proceed.

On behalf of MRA, I make this submission in support of Centennial Coal's Development Application for the Northern Coal Logistics Project.

Centennial Coal promotes and leads by example with best practice health, safety and environmental standards for its employees and contractors.

It's commitment to the region provides local jobs for direct employees and suppliers with the flow on effects to the local economy wide-ranging.

As a Newcastle based engineering organisation with 42 employees, MRA supports and endorses the Northern Coal Logistics Project.

As an employee of Centennial Coal, of course I would like to see this project proceed. I see first hand the need for employment, in a location desperate for jobs. I have also witnessed the direct impact to many local companies, (employers), who would normally supply labour and goods to this business sector, slowly close their doors as this industry struggles.

As a local resident, with my own children attending the local school, only several hundred metres from Newstan, were my wife is also a teacher, I have a vested interest to make sure that any industry in the area, is environmentally and socially responsible. The area around Newstan, Cooranbong and the Private Haul Road is our backyard and we spend a lot of our time on Lake Macquarie itself water skiing and fishing.

As the engineer responsible for the implementation of so much Environmental Management Infrastructure at Newstan, I can honestly and proudly say that this company is serious about their environment, social and corporate responsibilities.
I have had the privilege of escorting many individuals around the latest Environmental Management Infrastructure at Newstan and none have left the site with anything less than praise for the infrastructure and quality of work across the site. These tours have included individuals from the following:
* Australian Institute of Engineers
* University of Newcastle
* University of Technology Sydney
* University of South Korea
* Hunter Water Australia
* Hunter Water Corporation
* Metropolitan Water Directorate
* Hunter New England Health

With the installation of a new Community Centre for the Clean Water Plant at the Newstan site, Centennial has recently held excursions for year 11 and 12 students, studying Environmental Management, Biology, Chemistry and Science, with the help of presentations from Newstan Engineers. Some local residents have also participated in excursions through the new centre.

Centennial is a long term player in the coal mining industry. The effort, time and expense invested into the Northern Coal Logistics Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), is a testament to their commitment and expected responsibility for this project. The independent science behind the EIS is staggering and something for Centennial and the Coal Industry to be proud of.

As a local resident, father, husband and an engineer, it is the science, the numbers and recent performance of Centennial which provide me with confidence that his project can be undertaken in an environmentally and socially responsible manner.

Centennial Coal is a long term customer of my employer BASF and a significant part of my employment is related to providing products and services to the Centennial Coal operations in NSW. As part of my day to day work, I regularly visit the existing Centennial Coal operations and I am always impressed by their focus on operating safely, and the environment. I understand that this project is essential to long term viability of these coal mining operations. If the project is refused and Centennial Coal is unable to continue operating these mines, then it is possible that this would impact on my on going employment based on the Central Coast.

Centennial plays a big part in supplying coal for local electricity generation and this is something the state of NSW needs.
Mandalong supplies coal directly underground to Eraring and Delta power stations.
I spend my salary on local businesses and services and I vote.
Myself & my family's way of life, as well as my employment, rely on this Project and Mandalong South extension. If theses are not approved I will be forced to leave to find employment elsewhere.

The Newstan Colliery Clean Water Plant and associated water management activities and programs is an outstanding example of sensible and practical environmental management to minimise the long term impacts of this extractive industry.

The produced water quality is to a very high standard, continuously monitored and subject to independent sampling and testing.

The proactive management of water resources upon this site and a strong focus upon ensuring the high quality of water discharges from the plant at all times and protection of the downstream environment is clearly evident at this facility.

The Newstan Clean Water Plant includes a public engagement and educational facility that is now an excellent resource to local schools, universities and community groups.
