Dear Sir/Madam,

State Significant Project - Springvale Mine Extension (SSD 12_5594)

Important swamps, pagodas, and stream environments in this significant part of the Gardens of Stone region must not be damaged by longwall coal mining but instead protected in a state conservation area.
The Springvale and the adjoining Angus Place mine extension proposals must be subject to a Planning Assessment Commission review with concurrent Public Hearings.
Centennial Coal must not be allowed to simply replicate the damage it has already caused to nationally threatened upland swamps on the Newnes Plateau for which it was required by the Commonwealth Government to pay $1.45 million in reparations.
The sandstone rock supporting the 41 nationally endangered swamps, including the 11 shrub swamps affected by the proposal must not be fractured.
The proposed discharge of up to 43.8megalitres/day eco-toxic mine effluent must be treated by reverse osmosis technology to remove all metals and salts before discharge to the Coxs River.
The scenic western edge of the Newnes Plateau must be protected from further scarring by new roads, pipeline and electricity easements.
Carne Creek is currently in a pristine state, and its waters that flow through the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area are of the highest standard. This creek must not run bright orange or suffer reduced flows, just like the Wolgan River after Centennial Coal wrecked it.
Please require Centennial to revise this proposal to improve environmental outcomes. Carne and Bungleboori Creeks, pagodas, cliffs and the many nationally endangered swamps must not be damaged.
Yours sincerely,
Su Li Sin

I support the expansion of Springvale Colliery as it will continue to support a local workforce of up to 280 staff, 70 contractors and create up to an additional 30 positions.

Having family members employed at the Colliery it is of the utmost importance to ensure that not only their future employment is secured but also that of all employees at the mine.

Springvale Colliery has a good track record of mining in our local area with minimal impacts to the people that live here and the local environment.

Miners support local businesses and without future employment these businesses will suffer. Also local schools will be affected if Miners are forced to relocate.

Many Miners have a family history of living locally and being employed in the Mining Industry. Where will they find employment and support their families if forced to relocate? Who will buy their homes? How will they afford such a move?

Springvale Colliery also plays a big part in supplying coal for local electricity generation.

Centennial Coal is also a major sponsor of many local events in the area. Local Miners also contribute through weekly donations out of their wages in lodge fees which are distributed to local charities and groups. Without this continued generous support many charities and community groups will suffer.

I support the Springvale Coal Mine extension and the continued employment of 280 staff, 70 contractors and up to an additional 30 positions.

The Mine plays a vital role in the local area not only for employment but also in sponsoring many local events and donating to charity.

Local Miners have a long history of generously donating from their wages to various charities including equipment for local public and community hospitals, the elderly, school fund raisers, Early Intervention, Legacy and Cancer Groups to mention a few. Without this continued support many groups would suffer.

Having family members employed at Springvale it is imperative that not only their employment is secured but also that of their workmates.

These families are vital to the economy of the local community and support local businesses in the area. Without their continued support many businesses will suffer financially and services will be lost.

Many miners have invested in homes and their children attend local schools. These families and individuals are involved in local sporting and community groups. If forced by the prospect of relocation who will purchase their homes? Where will they find employment? The whole community will suffer as a result of loss of employment.

Springvale Coal has a good track record of mining in our local area with minimal impacts to the people that live here and the local environment.

The mine plays a big part in supplying coal for both the domestic and export market. Electricity Generation cannot function without coal.

Dear Madam/SIr,

State Significant Project - Springvale Mine Extension (SSD 12_5594)

I strongly object to this mine extension based on the following reasons:

Now is not the time to be starting any new coal projects, let alone in pristine areas, with high ecological value.

Even if you don't care about the environment at all, even if you are not worried about the terrible threat of climate change, the need to move beyond fossil fuels, into renewable energy there are obvious economic issues with this project.

The price of coal is dropping globally. Before long, it won't even be economical to mine coal and the taxpayer will be left with a big mess left behind by a bankrupted company. Coal is a polluting industry, injurious to human health, destructive of clean water and a major contributor to climate change.

Community protests will continue to delay this project and add to the costs. Once the global coal price drops below $60 per tonne, the industry is over in Australia and that is going to happen by the end of the decade on current trends.

Governments should be protecting the public against the depredations of corporations, not aiding and abetting them in their destructive and greedy activities. Where is the public good in allowing this project to go ahead? I see no evidence of it.

Have some foresight and some responsibility and put a stop to this dangerous, dirty and destructive industry once and for all. It's not wanted and it's not needed.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I understand the proposed Springvale Mine Extension will severely impact on the Carne Creek, Wolgan River, Marangaroo and Bunglebouri Creeks. It will cause land surfaces to subside up to 1.65 metres, in turn causing land cracking and surface groundwater aquifers to drop by up to 10 metres. I also understand it will impact on 41 nationally endangered swamps.

The proposal should be subject to a Planning Assessment Commission review with concurrent public hearings.

Yours sincerely

Centennial Coal should revise this proposal to improve environmental outcomes. The Company has apparently already caused damage in the Newnes Plateau and there are important areas such as swamps, pagodas etc that are imperilled. Our dependence on coal should also be reduced, not increased.

I oppose this submission due to the damage it will do to the Gardens of Stone area.
This area should be protected. It would be sad to see the swamps etc damaged for coal exports.

I read that "Centennial... admits its mining will fracture iconic Birds Rock, a Flora Reserve, and the sandstone beds under 73 nationally endangered swamps."

I have seen enough mismanaged areas after mining operations where the area is not properly rehabilitated. It seems large companies find it cheaper to pay the monetary penalties than look after our nature areas.

Dear Madam/ Sir

This submission relates to both Angus Place and Springvale mine extensions.

Even the current surface works are involving extensive clearing.

About 1.5m subsidence and cracking will destroy the water table.

The heavy metal pollutants into the Grose River from the closed Canyon Colliery still make the water poisonous after many years and this proposal pumps heavy metals into Sydney's water supply- Lithgow already has significant health problems.

Wolgan River was polluted above Wolgan Falls by a surruptitious discharge by this company which accepted the fine and if it expands will probably pollute the pristine Carne Creek catchment.

Enormous long term costs and environmental degradation of public land are proposed for 13 years of Centennial Coal profit. This land is within two hours of Sydney and is of great diversity and beauty. The fracturing of pagodas and dead trees along the ridges at the back of Baal Bone long wall mining is an example of what is to come.

This is not a suitable location for broad scale long wall mining.

This area is precious. Why do these proposals even get considered when the short term gains are so slight for the long term irreversible destruction?

Centennial Coal has a shocking track record, having in the past damaged upland swamps on the Newnes Plateau. They were required by the Commonwealth Government to pay $1.45 million in reparations - probably treated as a mere operating cost for them.

Water is a precious resource, and the proposed discharge of up to 43.8megalitres a day of toxic mine effluent containing metals and salts is to be discharged to the Coxs River. This will be treated presumably but I suppose if something goes wrong they can always just pay a fee to the government and say sorry.
