Greater Sydney Region Tree Canopy 2024/25

The Greater Sydney Region Tree Canopy 2024/25 dataset provides information on tree canopy cover for the metropolitan urban area and metropolitan rural area of Greater Sydney. This data can be analysed from the individual tree point to regional scale. Having current and accurate estimates of tree canopy supports councils and government to reliably identify areas of tree canopy and confidently develop urban greening and heat island mitigation strategies and actions. This dataset provides the user with information at a known spatial accuracy. The dataset is based off aerial imagery with a resolution of 0.16cm to 0.48m (dependent on spectral band) captured by ArborCarbon Pty Ltd.

In the dataset, “tree canopy” is classified as all vegetation greater than 3m.

The dataset includes canopy cover, height stratified vegetation cover, high resolution RGB imagery, false colour composite, vegetation condition index, surface temperature, colour scaled surface temperature and tree point data.

The canopy cover data is publicly available and can be accessed as spatial data for the first time. It is also summarised by LGA and suburb in an excel spreadsheet document alongside the Greater Sydney Region Tree Canopy 2024/25 spatial data.

The other data can be accessed by Greater Sydney councils, NSW Government employees and external organisations contracted to councils or NSW Government (subject to department assessment and approval).

The dataset was collected using the same methodology as the Greater Sydney Region Tree Canopy 2022/23 dataset and is directly comparable. The dataset uses LGA and suburb boundaries that have been updated from the Greater Sydney Region Tree Canopy 2022/23 dataset, due to changes in suburb boundaries. The updated boundaries have also been applied to the Greater Sydney Region Tree Canopy 2022/23 dataset in the excel spreadsheet document to enable direct comparison.
