The project is critical to securing the continued production of plate steel in Australia and in the Illawarra. It will be critical to maintaining sovereign capability to supply into strategic sectors such as defence, infrastructure and renewable energy.

This project is an excellent example of investment in Australian sovereign manufacturing capability and capacity. A transition to renewable energy is only possible with the infrastructure to support it. To achieve this transition Australia needs to be capable of designing and manufacturing our own infrastructure, not simply importing it from another country. Building this sovereign capability will ensure there are engineering & manufacturing jobs for future generations.

The aim of the Project is to improve the production capability and capacity of the Plate Mill to cater for increased demand for steel plate, including in the defence and renewable energy industries. The existing Plate Mill has produced up to 430,000 tonnes of plates per year. The Project will increase the throughput to up to 600,000 tonnes of plate per year and will create 18 FTE jobs during operation.

The Project will result in reduced GHG emissions due to the improved efficiency of the new furnace. The assessments undertaken in the Environmental Impact Statement concluded that the impacts of the Project (e.g. noise, air quality, water, hazards, visual amenity) are considered to be negligible.

For these reasons above, i support the project

I strongly support this project as it will help BlueScope reduce GHG emissions through the improved efficiency of the new furnace. Steelmaking is a well-known hard-to-abate sector, therefore, opportunities such as this upgrade should be progressed. Additionally, the project is predicted to have negligible impacts on other environmental aspects and will provide an additional 18 full time equivalent jobs during operation.
