The continuation of the Dendrobium Mine is critical to maintaining the economic health of the Illawarra and surrounding areas. The supply of coal to Blue Scope steel is essential for the continuation of steel manufacture on the eastern seaboard of Australia. It has been recognized by the Federal Government that one of the major shortfalls in the Australia economy is the lack of manufacturing within Australia. It is essential to maintain the current manufacturing base if the country is to move forward.
Environmental impact has been demonstrated to have little or no impact , noting that mining infrastructure has been established adjacent to the current proposal for more than 20years.

After working in the environmental sector at Agurba Pty Ltd for 2 years during my undergraduate degree, I have been exposed first hand to the detrimental impacts of long wall mining underneath my water catchment. In my experience, every single time a long wall moves beneath a waterway, the bedrock fractures, the clear water travels subsurface through the bedrock, iron oxidises and returns downstream in a thick orange sludge, void of inhabitants. Additionally, associated upland swamps lose their water retention capacity and the very system which purifies our drinking water is destroyed beyond repair. Whilst habitat loss for native biota is not a priority for the modern capitalist society, one must understand that a reduction in upland swamps and adjacent tributaries is a direct threat to the human species, particularly in the context of an aridifying continent. With increasing climate anomalies associated with recent increases in global temperatures, no amount of seasonal water restrictions will be sufficient to allow for plentiful water for an expanding Wollongong population this coming El Nina. Undermining a water catchment and subsequently undermining its local, dependant population is an old, barbaric practise fraught with greed and fear of an unstable economy. A practise that exists in next to no other place on the planet. The expansion of this practise is unfathomable in the context of climate change, the native biota, both endangered and abundant, terrestrial and aquatic, anthropogenic and natural, are all threatened. If we are to continue along the path of the greedy mistletoe, we will choke our host.

The project has taken environmental concerns on board and has obviously reduced the risk in that area significantly. The employment benefits for the Illawarra and beyond would be massive- Direct employment and contractors. Additionally IMC only having one mine could also effect longer term sustainability of mining in the area, which could have massive impacts at the port and other mines- leading to a many thousands losing employment.

I feel the benefits to the extension are beneficial to the community. Any adverse affects to the environment are carefully being controlled and the benefits to families is quite vast.

Fully support this project. Green options in steelmaking are still in their infancy, although in future this needs to be reviewed the state and federal government need to maintain our steel industry in its current form until technology is proven. Extending the life of all Southern Coal Fields is critical to our steel making eco-system.
How else would protestors be able to drive to their chosen picket lines without Steel to make cars and components?
The next 20-30 years will provide security challenges for Australia, keeping our Metallurgical Coal assets going ensures local business and production is taken care of in lieu of short supply or non-supply from other countries.
I have witnessed local business thrive from the mining industry, local PPE providers, engineering firms, Tyre fitters, mechanical workshops and local indigenous groups are all supported by Metallurgical Coal and that's just to name a few.

The Dendrobium mine provides direct stable jobs for locals and supports the local economy, losing the mine would be a big hit to the local manufacturing industry both directly and indirectly.

Dendrobium coal mine supports a massive amount of families in the Illawarra, both directly and indirectly. I would be indirectly affected if this approval was to be squashed there for I support the extension of the mine.

This project is critical to Wollongongs employment. In addition, it is not a coke making pit but rather steel making. Continuation of production has wide ranging positive outcomes employment wise and further in establishing Wollongong at the forefront of assisting in the production of infrastructure for green energy

I would like to see this Extension go ahead for a few reasons...
First reason - To create more direct job opportunities for the Illawarra region and its surrounds.
Second reason - To support a great deal of existing, indirect jobs and businesses supporting this mine. And the continuance of S32 supporting the community.
Third reason - To ensure my family is supported in this climate which is fraught with uncertainty due to inflation, rising interest rates and conflicts worldwide.

This project will support the local steel industry and other steel industries with metallurgical coal that is sourced in the most sustainable and safest way available in the world. Good quality steel is important for the huge range of infrastructure projects required for a low carbon future.
