I object to this project based on proposed location and impact and loss of green space/sporting fields especially for those sporting associations that use existing fields to be destroyed for carparking, let alone this new facility.
The City of Newcastle needs to consider how to construct facilities like this without losses to existing use space through re-purposes of other areas.
A single story proposal is inadequate for considering the future growth of Newcastle as a whole. Facilities like this should be constructed with a first story carpark option in mind to better utilise any project footprint into the future instead of creating single use carpark deadspace of one story. Car park areas at Hunter Stadium should also be reconsidered as part of this development application where possible an upgrade to hunter stadium could be incorporated into a multi level basketball facility offering a better use of overall space and an improved entertainment precinct.

Whilst I agree we need a basketball facility, the choice of location is not appropriate. It severely impacts the students of Lambton High who use the current oval as their only green space, impating them both physically and mentally. It will increase traffic around the school, potentially putting students at risk and impacting the school buses. The construction phase will have a significant noise and hazard impact on the school.

This project will also affect local junior sporting clubs who regularly use the space, such as soccer and cricket.

Local residents already have a significant traffic impact from McDonald Jones Stadium and this will increase it.

The taking of open space playing fields which are in constant use by local sporting groups as well as the adjacent High School should not be allowed. There are other options which must be considered before this option is approved namely the use of the existing site upon which the basketball stadium is sited.

I'm a support worker with clients and family in the area. The area is already congested with traffic for Knights Stadium. This will only add to this already congested area. It makes the area very dangerous for traffic and pedestrians alike with police already required to control traffic when there's an event in that area and speed limits being reduced to 40klms/hr on a busy section of road.

There is already enough traffic congestion in the proposed area, especially in the event of NRL games. Secondary to that, I feel the preservation of green space, such as this, is important for our children and our local sports.

The traffic and parking around this area is already horrendous when the Knight's, Jets or musical events are on. Just imagine the cars/parking if a basketball stadium is added. In addition it is taking away grassed area to a high school and fields for other sporting events.

We need to keep the current green space as facilities for the existing sporting endeavours and the high school. Destroying these facilities will be detrimental to the community. Not to mention the traffic nightmare that will occur on Turton rd.

I support the project as it is situated where participants and families can easily get to using a variety of transport options. It also provides an indoor facility for a variety of sports that can benefit of a facility that is up to date, safe and well used.

The green space is for the whole community. Green space is essential for a persons wellbeing and mental health. The people of this community use this space daily to exercise, walk their dogs, play with their children, come together for concerts ect.
Lambton High School students use it everyday for exercise and recreation. If there is an emergency (eg: fire) this is the emergency evacuation point for the entire school. This is a life saving space.
Lots of other sporting clubs share this space also such as football and cricket. It is a space for multiple sports not just one.
Many community members use this space for an assortment of reasons and it is part of the Lambton green corridor which we are all very proud of and protective of. The needs of many should always outweigh the wants of a few.

Newcastle needs a new indoor sports centre as the existing facility is too small for the number of people wishing to use the facility. The basketball stadium leaks profusely during heavy rain making it dangerous and unsafe. The lease of the stadium is also due to expire in a few years, leaving Newcastle without any suitable indoor sports stadium.

This is an exceptionally poor use of flood prone land. The proposed buildings will dominate the landscape and impact the students of the adjacent Lambton High who will cease to have access to open land. The noise pollution during the construction phase will impact local residents and have a detrimental and harmful affect on students and staff of Lambton High.
Have the local aboriginal/ indigenous people been consulted in this planning process? There is an existing basketball court less then 1 km from the proposed site. Why is this site not being developed? The people of Newcastle have not requested this gross monstrosity to accommodate a sport of low participation.

I have been involved in Newcastle Basketball for the past 32 years. Having a new proposed location such as the application in Lambton is the best thing that could happen for Newcastle basketball.
My son has been playing also for the past 5 years. The past 2 of those, he has been unable to, as there has been a waitlist to get into a team. The first year I was informed that there was just over 400 kids on the waitlist due to the growing nature of the sport but also due to the fact that there isn’t enough room to house the current demand.
Unlike sports such as Football. Netball, Soccer ect whom have multiple locations to house games and training, Basketball doesn’t have that luxury. Other sports also don’t have wait lists. Newcastle Basketball needs a new location NOW. This is not fair on Newcastle Basketball and the sport that many love.

You cannot take away one of the many large, well used grassy areas to replace with concrete basketball courts. What a ridiculous idea. Traffic will be horrendous getting in and out. I’m all for a basketball stadium but NOT here. Find an unused block of land to build.

The project is on current green space playing fields that are used daily by a local school and local sporting clubs. It is located in a suburb on a main road with the car parking being limited and on site parking also limited in nature. The parks can become very waterlogged in wet weather and are subject to flooding from a nearby water course. The playing fields along the length of the water course can alleviate the water level. The development could reasonably direct water into local homes. There are surely more suitable locations in a less urban environment. The existing site of the Newcastle basketball could be redeveloped. The Clyde Street gasworks site could be considered or potentially sites in other LGAs. There is very significant community opposition to this development due only to its location.

This is not the right location for this project. There are already parking concerns in the area & the proposal takes currently well used green space.

Please go back to the drawing board & find a better suited, alternative solution.
