Due to a recent amendment to State Environmental Planning Policy (State and Regional Development) 2011 the consent authority for this project is now the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces. The Minister has delegated determination of the project to the Department

The Applicant is proposing to develop and operate a hard rock quarry located approximately 4 km northeast of Karuah, to extract the known hard rock resource of the site from a single extraction area covering up to approximately 12 ha.

I OPPOSE the proposed Karuah South Quarry’ – SSD 17-8795 project on environmental grounds. As a resident of Bulga village in the Hunter Valley I know from a personal experience all about the dangers of allowing mining operation to go ahead without adequate state regulation. The proponent of the Karuah South Quarry should not be allowed to discharge dirty mining waste water into the surrounding waterways. Proper treatment of the gravel quarry waste water to an adequate standard should not be technically difficult nor expansive.
