Born and bred in Australia I choose to live far from my family and have lived in Sweden for the past 20+ years. It's a green country, one where the forests flourish and there is green space available for all. The animals roam wildly and people flock to the forest to pick berries, mushrooms, to fish, hike, ski, or just to walk. The Swedes love their forests.
Our forests are the organs of this planet - we need them, we need more than what we have today, not less.
And we need as much green space as possible, it soothes the soul, it calms the troubled and gives energy to those in need. Let the forest be all this. Let the forest be - do not pollute it with your gas wells.
PROTECTION OF NATURAL RESOURCES
I am not proud of a country that allows this. Australia has a poor reputation on environmental matters and this project will not support that. Environmentally conscious nations and people look to a country that is supposedly prosperous and wonder why we can allow this - why we do not have more respect for the environment, why we do not preserve the very things that make Australia unique, why do we do we not protect the very thing that tourists, visitors want to see - our natural resources.
THE FUTURE OF ENERGY
My employer is a Swedish state-owned energy company with generation, distribution and commercial sales in 6 countries across Europe - we are committed to becoming fossil free within one generation - we are committed to leading the way, to being courageous and to making the change that is needed - we are committed to becoming fossil free ourselves, to helping our customers be fossil free within a generation - that includes our B2C, our B2B and our city partnerships. How does that compare to the industry in Australia? How sustainable are our cities? How committed is the NSW government to leading the change, to providing renewable energy? Or will big business and the mining dollar leave you scrambling to keep up with the others in years to come?
Will those same mining dollars leave future generations wondering how you could so easily succumb to a quick buck rather than thinking long term. It won't be long before solar panels are produced at a more competitive rate and we will see a growing number of prosumers entering the market - businesses will become self-sufficient and not only will your energy industry see a loss in the customer base but there will be a growth in supply, just as we see here in Europe - it is the future of the energy industry.
I urge you to compare your decisions to what is going on in Europe, Sweden in particular. I urge you to realise that Australia has incredible resources in the form of forest and natural environments, not in raw materials such as gas. I urge you to see that the power of the sun can be harnesses, and that it soon will be, in preference to fossil fuels. I urge you to make a decision that is right for all of Australia, including the Aussies of the future. I urge you to lead the way and be part of the change that is underway.

1. The project will remove water from one of the main critical recharge areas of the Great Artesian Basin. This has the potential to reduce the hydraulic pressure head in the Basin's recharge areas. This could lead to the stopping of free flow of water to the surface at springs and bores across the whole Basin (Ref: SoilFutures Consulting 2014, Great Artesian Basin Recharge Systems and Extent of Petroleum and Gas Leases. (attached))
2. Leakage of methane from the CSG field and during production, transport and processing of the natural gas will be a powerful contributor to climate change.
3. The project is rejected by the Gamilaraay people, who are the traditional custodians of the land.
4. An overwhelming percentage of the area's local farmers and residents are opposed to CSG.
5. Santos has a track record of contaminating the environment with leaks and spills from previous CSG projects.
6. Santos does not have an adequate plan for safely disposing of salt waste from the project.
7. The project would threaten the survival of numerous endangered species that inhabit the Pilliga forest.
8. Methane flares from the project would increase the likelihood of severe bushfires in the area.

Furthermore the exploration for and mining of ANY fossil fuels is abhorrent given the crisis we are facing with climate change. Climate change is the biggest of many huge threats humanity and life on earth is facing, and it is within out power to reverse the trend. I am against the development of any further fossil fuel industries opening up in any part of Australia.
This industry threatens the nature of the region and will effect biodiversity, water quality, forest cover, and ultimately air quality. It is a waste of taxpayers money and contributes to the destruction of our much needed natural life support systems.
As well as threats to our life support systems the Laird forest is a wilderness, one of all too few that need protection not more devastation.
Think about the future! Please do not issue any more licenses for CSG mining in the Pilliga region, or anywhere else in Australia.
