Objection to Pemulwuy Project's proposed increase of student accommodation

I'm objecting to this proposal for the following reasons:

1. The increase of the building from six to 24 stories will have a seriously detrimental effect on the surrounding precinct as it is completely out of character with the existing scale of houses and other buildings bounded by Eveleigh, Lawson, Abercrombie and Cleveland Streets.

This area is an unique example of historic terrace housing, converted shops, factories and warehouses that give Redfern its outstanding character.

A building of 24 stories would add to current collection high-rise buildings on the eastern side of Redfern Station, leading to a wind-swept ghetto of unattractive, sun-blocking buildings.

2. The rationale by the Aboriginal Housing Company for the increase to this development is that it is the only way they can obtain the funds needed to build the housing for Aboriginal people on The Block. It has been confirmed by Sydney MP Tanya Plibersek, that federal funds were offered to the AHC when she was in government, but refused because of the conditions attached to the contract and the NSW government made a similar offer. These offers should be revisited so the housing can be built without the need to sell off the land, build this intrusive building and Aboriginal people can move back to the area that is rightly theirs.

3. Six hundred (mainly overseas ) students living in close proximity to low-income Aboriginal people is not a good idea. This was stated by local Aboriginal people at the consultation, arranged by the AHC, before the meeting was stopped. The six hundred students would dominate the public spaces ,such as the grounds of the Redfern Community Centre, alienating the area.

For the reasons the modifications should not proceed.
