Submission for the Rocky ZHill Coal Project - Applicatio No SSD - 4966 MOD1

Dear Sir or Madam:

I oppose the Rocky Hill Coal Project and the Stratford Mine Modification on the following grounds.

If the proposed mine is allowed to proceed the scenic beauty of the Gloucester valley will be irreparably damaged which will lead to a dramatic drop in tourist numbers resulting in loss of financial benefit and jobs in the area.

The benefit to the NSW Government and the people of NSW is debatable. I understand GRL will pay $63M in revenue and $60M in taxes. The life of the mine is 16 to 20 years meaning the company will pay just over $3M a year for revenue and taxes and most of the profit from this company will go overseas.

The NSW Government needs to invest in renewables, particularly in rural areas where unemployment is high. Town, like Gloucester and my local town Dungog could be embracing the new world of solar, thermal solar, biomass, wind and hydro.

It is time we stopped outdated industries like coal and followed the rest of the world into the 21st century.

Yours faithfully

I oppose the Rocky Hill Coal Mine

In this day and age of Climate Change, the last thing we should be doing is mining more coal to burn.

This particular mine will be far too close to a residential area. The adverse health impacts of living close to coal mines are well known - breathing in coal dust during the 24hr operation; noise pollution from the 24hr machinery movements; light pollution from the 24hr operation of the mine under lights, etc.

This is also a tourist area - why jeopardise the livelihoods of an entire population for the sake of a very small amount of jobs and no benefits to the local community who will be subject to continual noise and coal dust pollution for years to come, day in and day out? It isn't fair - so there is a huge equity issue here.

The environment will be adversely affected: by the burning of the coal after it is mined - addition of CO2 to the atmosphere; by the contamination of water resources locally as the coal is mined and washed; the loss of trees and habitat for local flora and fauna; the loss of water required by the mine for production of coal which could be used elsewhere as drinking water, irrigation water, and many other uses.

Please, do the right thing and block the Rocky Hill Coal Mine in the Gloucester area.

Yours sincerely,
