Sydney's population growth stalled, while regional NSW kept growing

In 2020-21, Greater Sydney’s population was most heavily impacted by international border closures.

The latest data on population change across regions of NSW is for the 2020-21 financial year.

This data reveals the uneven impacts of COVID-19 on different parts of the state, as well as the persistence of other longstanding population dynamics.

The reopening of international borders is likely to alter these patterns of population change. Even with a return to higher growth, we will continue to see long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic for local populations.
