The operating type of a window or door affects its opening areas. The more a window or door can be opened, the more it can help reduce your cooling load.
Generally, awning, casement, double hung, louveres, tilt and turn, hinged and bifold or trifold windows have larger opening areas than a sliding window. However, the opening areas of large awning, casement, double hung and hinged windows would be more limited because fixed glass panels are often introduced as the size of these window increases.
If your window has a combination of fixed and other openable parts, select the window type based on relevant openable part.
U‑Value refers to the ability of the window (glass and frame) to conduct heat. A lower U‑Value indicates a better insulator. Based on window frame and glass selection, only relevant U-value range will be available for selection.
SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) is a measure of how much solar radiation passes through a glazed window or door. A glazed window or door with a high SHGC allow a greater amount of solar radiation to pass through and vice versa. BASIX uses different drop down options to accommodate the varying SHGC requirements for different climate zones in NSW.
