Make a submission

Learn how to have your say on State significant projects.

Have your say online

To have your say on a project, you must lodge a submission online through the NSW Planning Portal (Major Projects website) before the close of exhibition.

You can make a submission online by creating a Major Projects account.

With a Major Projects account, you can save submissions in progress, view a history of all submissions you’ve made and stay up-to-date with the progress of an application through automated email alerts.

Once you have created an account, search for the relevant application (or find it amongst the applications currently on exhibition) and click 'Make a Submission'.

Help using the NSW Planning Portal

  1. The department is committed to supporting users of the NSW Planning Portal. We understand some people may have difficulty using the portal to make a submission. There are help and resources available  including a step-by-step guide on how to make a submission and answers to frequently asked questions
  2. For more help with making a submission, call Service NSW on 1300 305 695.

If you think you'll need help making a submission using the portal, it's a good idea to contact Service NSW sooner rather than later. Ensure you give yourself plenty of time to make a submission before the project’s exhibition end date.

What should my submission include?

When making a submission you will be required to include:

  • your full name and address
  • the name of the application and the application number
  • whether you ‘support’, ‘object to’ the project, or if you are simply providing comment
  • the reasons why you support or object to the project

You must also disclose all reportable political donations made in the previous 2 years when making a submission. For further information about political donations and to obtain disclosure statements, visit the donations and gift disclosure page

Submissions policy

For more information on making a submission and how the department will manage and consider submissions, view the department’s submissions policy and privacy statement

Privacy and personal information

The department only collects personal information for a lawful purpose which directly relates to our primary function as a NSW Government agency and for obtaining feedback about our services. For more information, read the department's privacy statement.

How will my personal information be used?

When you make a submission, the department will publish your:

  • name (unless you state you want it withheld)
  • suburb
  • submission and any attachments (including any personal information you have included in those documents)
  • political donations disclosure statement (if applicable), in accordance with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (EP&A Act).

Please note, if you disclose a political donation, you will not be able to request confidentiality as we’re obliged to publish the political donations disclosure statement, which includes your name and address.

Can my name be withheld?

If you do not want the department to publish your name in the list of submitters on the NSW Planning Portal, you must tick the box in the online submissions form indicating you’d like your name to be withheld. In these cases, the Planning Portal will display “NAME WITHHELD’ in the list of submissions.

Do not include any personal information in the body of your submission.

We publish submissions in full, regardless of whether any personal information is contained.

Submissions report

After the exhibition period closes, the department publishes all submissions on the NSW Planning Portal and asks the proponent to prepare a report responding to any issues raised in the submissions. The submissions report is published on the NSW Planning Portal.
