I understand the implication of new technologies such as "green steel", but the technology is just not there to implement as yet. Relining 6BF gives BlueScope time and funding to implement such technologies for future generations and to maintain such a critical industry.

Hence the No.6 Blast Furnace startup to replace the ageing No.5 Blast Furnace, is a major investment in the Port Kembla Steel plant and Australian steel Industry. It is absolutely necessary to underpin steelmaking at the Port Kembla plant to maintain Australian steelmaking and domestic sovereignty for steel supply into major forthcoming defence projects and other significant infrastructure projects for Australia's growth, development and continuing prosperity.

Australia needs to continue manufacturing steel for domestic and export use, and coke ovens are still the most economical way to do this.
