Blast Furnace 6 Reline

Will be a great contributor to manufacturing in Australia and is the only viable option to continue large scale steel manufacture in the short to medium term. Will enable the transition to a more carbon efficient method once technology is available.

Project is vital to keep steelmaking in Australia viable. This project will ensure the transition to alternative technologies (which is not yet developed) occurs in this industry.

I fully support this project and the future of Responsible steel in the Illawarra.

This is an excellent decision by the bluescope steel board to further extend the life of steel making in the Illawarra, not only will this project create more jobs but also a massive cash injection for all local businesses. Bluescope is also committed to reducing greenhouse emissions.

As a local contractor owning and operating in the Wollongong region for more that 20 years, this project will assist us in continuing and developing our business into the future. We currently employ a local workforce of 40 whom are directly involved at BSL, should this project continue our workforce will potentially double in the coming years.

This project will provide the best solution for the Illawarra and Australian steelmaking that is possible currently. Bluescope has shown that it is committed to reduce the carbon output to as low as possible using current technology, and will continue to improve using new technologies into the future.

The relining of No6 Blast Furnace will ensure the ongoing steelmaking business in Australia. The Illawarra Local Region will benefit by continued direct and indirect employment of thousands of local residents. Relining the Blast Furnace with improved environmental upgrades will showcase to the world Australia's commitment to Green House Gas Emission reductions.

There will be upwards of 250 new jobs created during construction and the project is a $1 billion total project investment for BlueScope. The project will be completed in 3 years (by 2026) and BlueScope will spend over $100m in environmental improvement upgrades to prepare the business for green steelmaking in the future. This is an exciting and critical project for the Illawarra region.

I believe in this project. The ability for Australia to have capacity to manufacture their own steel products with out the need to rely on other countries is crucial. Bluescope steel is making a large investment in this project to ensure the best for the environment whilst also securing the future of many families and securing Australias manufacturing future

BlueScope values and long term commitments to the Environment are evidenced in their Sustainability Report and further through certification to Green Steel global accreditation. The long term benefits of manufacturing steel in Australia vs importing steel from countries less regulated such as China and India are stark. Full support should be given to the project. From my Materials Engineering knowledge there does not exist an economically viable alternative in Australia to produce iron for steelmaking (on the scale required for domestic demand) other than a blast furnace technology, nevertheless Bluescope has also committed to investing in future technologies to support a cleaner steelmaking future long term, this kind of investment is required to develop potential alternatives for the Global community.

Steelmaking is vital for not only the Illawarra but Australia as a nation. The strive towards carbon neutral and the contingencies built into this plan to achieve it are world class for a steelmaker.

The No 6 Reline Blast Furnace is an important project for the Wollongong and in particular Australia and the world in terms of having steel production continue for at least 20 years. This project will support at least 10000 workers directly and locally in Wollongong which will go a long way to help the community after 2 years of covid related job cuts. I wholeheartedly support this project as an Australian, worker and a dad working as a contractor for Bluescope.
