This is a long overdue requirement for the Hunter community. Basketball is the second most played sport in the country and has a rich history in the Hunter. I support the design and location of this long overdue infrarstructure project.

There is ample space within the Newcastle Entertainment Centre precinct to construct said development.
There is a train station nearby to allow for patrons to arrive via public transport.
This would be a terrific opportunity to reinvent the Entertainment Centre and build purpose-built arenas capable of hosting large scale events ie music acts.
Turton Road is an extremely busy arterial road that already experiences severe congestion. Building another sports facility on this site will only compound current problems. Our infrastructure is already overloaded and our roads are only ever addressed with perennial band-aid measures. Funneling even more traffic to this area will have far reaching implications on residents who are already struggling to avoid countless potholes.
We already have McDonald Jones Stadium and the Hockey Association adjacent to each other, which already causes chaos when scheduling aligns.
There is limited green space/outdoor fields throughout the Newcastle LGA. Once they are gone, we will never get them back. In a climate where there is a crisis re: sedentary behaviour, carbon emissions, and general health; it would be detrimental to the community to have these areas taken away/built out. We have such a beautiful city but the continual overcapitalization is changing the feel & fabric of the town - something that cannot be undone.
There are far more appropriate areas for this development to take place (which will be great for the city); it’s just not Lambton.
As I mentioned above, I would suggest that a reimagining of the Newcastle Entertainment Centre precinct would be a far better investment for the future on Newcastle

As a Newcastle resident and parent, I strongly support the proposed Newcastle Basketball High-Performance Indoor Sports Centre (HISC) development. This project is a vital investment in our community’s sporting future.
Our current basketball stadium has reached the end of its functional life. Weather-related cancellations constantly disrupt training and games, disappointing children and hindering their development. We need modern, reliable facilities that operate year-round, giving our young athletes the consistent training environment they deserve.
The HISC will serve as a true community hub, accommodating basketball, futsal, pickleball, volleyball, netball, and tennis. This multi-sport capability allows families with diverse sporting interests to access quality facilities in one location, strengthening our sporting community connections.
Currently, many local children are turned away from programs due to insufficient court capacity. The expanded facility ensures no child misses opportunities to participate in sport due to inadequate infrastructure.
The broader community benefits are significant: improved public health through increased physical activity, positive youth engagement, clear talent development pathways, and enhanced social connections. The modern design will be fully accessible, welcoming community members of all ages and abilities.
This facility will strengthen Newcastle’s social fabric by bringing people together through sport, creating lasting friendships and building community identity through shared experiences.
I urge Council to approve this essential community infrastructure project. Our children, families, and entire community will benefit for generations to come.

The current stadium is falling apart, leaks in the rain and is too small to service a growing junior player base. As a community we want to encourage youth fitness and engagement and this facility is critical for that endeavour.

Newcastle basketball is a supportive place for children to learn basketball, also to get a first job in reffing. You learn multiple life skills reffing and coaching, you also make life long friends through playing basketball. It would be a mistake for people not to let this go ahead. I am a player, coach and referee and I think personally this new development would be excellent for new beginnings and chances for us as a community

I object to the location as it takes away the green spaces required for the community and a better location can absolutely be found.

After receiving the ‘amended’ plans for the proposed Basketball centre I’m very disappointed and concerned about the future of the multi use grounds. Not only were public concerns not covered, the future project doubled down and made the structure higher, area bigger and taken away the slither of land left for school children.
As a local resident I’m aware that with one entry on turton Rd and no turning lane for cars heading from the north all traffic will have to turn into Monash and either do a U turn or park on Monash and walk to the centre. This will cause heavy parking problems and traffic problems for the residents like me that already deal with stadium event issues and hockey event overflow.
Flooding concerns are a serious concern, something that residents will have to consider legal options if houses are damaged due to bigger strain on local storm water drains. Noise and light pollution will be a factor, doubling what is already an issue with Hockey not finishing until after 10pm most nights.
No fore thought is being considered as far as multiple event days. There will certainly be days where knights games, Basketball tournaments and Hockey events will all converge together on the same weekend. The surrounding area hardly handles knights games by themselves.
I’m vehemently opposed to this project. Way too many questions and not enough answers. I believe it’s being shoved through without transparency and I’m sceptical about many of the people involved in the process.
I hope concerns are heard, from residents, locals, sports teams, school staff and students. We have multiple groups from all walks of life affected by this for the sake of catering for one.
Thanks

This region is desperately in need of these new basketball facilities for people of all ages to enhance participation in sport and recreation. The site and structure proposals are extensive, clearly laid out and thoughtfully designed. This project will boost the morale, physical health and mental health of many people in the community including youth, young people, children and families as well as the positive impacts that will flow on to families and neighbourhoods.

To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to express my full support for the proposal to relocate and upgrade Newcastle’s basketball stadium. This is not simply a matter of replacing an old facility—it is a necessary step toward accommodating the growing needs of a vibrant, active, and increasingly engaged sporting community. The existing stadium at Broadmeadow, built more than 50 years ago, has served its purpose well, but it is now outdated, overcapacity, and unable to meet the region’s expanding demands.
Basketball in Newcastle is thriving. Participation has surged in recent years across all age groups and demographics, and this momentum should be encouraged, not limited. Unfortunately, the current venue cannot handle this growth. Registration periods for competitions and programs often close within days, with many players—particularly children and young people—turned away due to lack of space. This is not just a sports issue; it’s a community issue. Every child denied a spot on the court loses an opportunity to develop physically, socially, and emotionally in a supportive, team-focused environment.
The proposal to relocate the stadium to a new site with expanded capacity—up to 12 courts and a purpose-built show court—presents a forward-looking solution. A modern, multi-use indoor sports centre would not only serve basketball, but also other popular and emerging sports like volleyball, netball, futsal, pickleball, and more. It would give Newcastle the infrastructure to host regional and state competitions, drawing visitors to the area and stimulating the local economy through increased tourism, accommodation, and retail activity.
One of the most compelling aspects of this proposal is its ability to create opportunity. A larger, state-of-the-art venue would provide more space for grassroots competitions, school programs, all-abilities sports, elite training, and community events. It would bring together people from diverse backgrounds in a safe, inclusive, and inspiring setting. In a city as proud and passionate as Newcastle, a venue like this would quickly become more than just a sports facility—it would be a hub for community connection, youth development, and civic pride.
Let’s not miss this chance to do something truly significant for the region.
Sincerely,
Henry Barnett (I just want to play ball)

This is a much needed venue that will provide the community with a brilliant venue for multiple sports. This has been in the planning for many years without success finding land that is available and suitable. We cannot waste anymore time the community needs this sports centre urgently as the current stadium is no longer viable. Its too small, leaks every time it rains and the association is renting other courts every week so people can play.I fully support this proposal.Thankyou.

The old stadium is falling apart, and if this doesn’t go through, there will be no basketball in the region as the lease is expiring. After lease is up the stadium is being knocked down for apartments, which will be dire for both junior and senior basketball in the region as well have no place to go.
