HVO South Open Cut Coal Continuation Project

I support the project

I believe it is extremely beneficial not only for the local community and surrounding areas if the continuation of the project proceeds but also the country as a whole due to what the process provides in terms of materials.

I am making a submission for the go ahead for this project. In my opinion the continuation of the HVO south will be vital to local familys with young children like myself to secure a long term stable future in the hunter valley. Myself believes that coal is is very much still in need for the longer term of Australia. providing a cheaper and reliable alternative in power than others that are being suggested. 100's of local smaller businesses need these mines to continue to keep a roof over there own heads also.
please think about the community's when this is put fourth.

This project being a continuation of an existing mining operation will maintain employment levels and economic input for our local community. Currently with other large operations facing closure in the future years the impending shutdown of the coal industry needs to be staged to reduce shock to the local economy and community. HVO if permitted to continue operation can be a base to contain future coal supply to one operation.

I support the project and wish HVO to receive permission to continue to operate into the future as they do provide a much needed boost to the community in the form of employment opportunities and sponsorship.
However, if HVO receives permission to continue to operate, I would like to see them improve how they monitor and control the impact they have on the surrounding area and community and be held accountable for those impacts by the resource regulator or other authority.
It appears their current view on dust, noise and how they operate in wet weather is a reactive approach and not proactive.
an example of this is, during one hot afternnon on a 30 degree plus day whilst driving down Lemington road , an excavator could be seen in the west pit creating huge cloads and long trails of dust twice the height of the equipment whilst loading with the bucket raised right up in the air, and trucks travelling on the ramps also were kicking up long, tall clouds of dust easily twice the size of the truck. they appeared to travelling too fast for the conditions and the roads were not very wet.
yet when I continued out onto the Golden hwy and past Wambo operations, the trucks were travelling at lower speeds, on well wet down roads, with barely any visible dust. Whilst the excavators were tipping slowly into the trucks, with the bucket only just higher then the tray. the dust coming off the Wambo excavator was easily 1/3 the size from HVO's unit.
This is a very regular occurrence and on this occasion only a few trucks and one excavator could be seen. I can only imagine how many trucks and machines they have operating creating the same amount of dust. No wonder the horizon is stained brown each afternoon.
Other mines seem to manage their emissions a lot better.
If they were to manage things better, I would whole heartedly support them continuing to operate the mine.
They are a critical part of the Hunter Valley and do employee many people. they just need to clean up their act.

I support the extension of mine life of HVO south

I'm from the local area I've worked in mining for 10 years now and i highly support the hvo continuation project it will benefit the area and community's for years to come. This will guarantee me work for years to come and also will support me and my young family.

I support the project

HVO is a major employer in the hunter valley region and supports the community through both direct and indirect contributions. The mine is operated responsibly and sustainably and should be permitted to continue operations through the proposed continuation project.

My Name is Jayden and I would like to provide comment and objection to the project.
I am of the opinion that the EIS has not adequately considered the environmental impacts of Scope 3 emissions with the HVO project.
Please read my attached letter for an in depth assessment why Scope 3 should be considered and how it has influenced my decision to object to the HVO South Project. Please note, alike the EIS, this letter covers the scope of both HVO North and South projects.

In a nutshell I am of the opinion that the exclusion of scope 3 emissions, which accounts for 99.7% of all emissions directly related to the project, is a failure to adequately grasp the impacts adding 1.2 billion tonnes of CO2-e will have on the cumulative impact of greenhouse gas accumulating within the atmosphere.

Overlooking this impact has resulted in the failure to align the project with the goals of the IPCC 6th assessment report, Hunter Regional Plan 2026 and public interest of NSW as we will have to live with the associated climate change impacts, most notably in increased extreme weather events and water security.

This coupled with shady corporate dealings and reliance on failed carbon capture technology by the joint venture partners shows Yancoal and Glencore are not to be trusted when it comes to upholding their carbon emissions reduction goals.

This is based on the false narrative, written by disgraced politician John Barilaro, that NSW and the Hunter Valley needs more coal mining in order to thrive economically, of which drives the strategic context of this project.

Below is my list of recommendations for consideration in the EIS and project approval process.

Assess scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions (along side Scopes 1 and 2) under the legislative framework of the IPCC 2021 Summary for Policymakers, and the NSW EPA Climate Change policy, and any other relevant policy.

Assess the cumulative impacts of Scope 3 emissions will have on climate change and the increased risk of extreme weather events and all other climate change risks should a warming scenario exceed 1.5 and 2 degrees C.

Include an economic cost impact of dealing with a warming scenario of 1.5, 2 and >2 degrees C within the Social Impact Assessment section.

Compare the three above assessments to a do nothing scenario and form a EIA recommendation or mitigation measure of both environmental and economic factors.

I hope this has provided context into the seriousness implications of the approval of this project.

I have worked at HVO for close to a decade. HVO has given me my start in the industry and have allowed me to provide for my family, friends and the community as a whole.
In my time here HVO has always strived to be an outstanding member of the local community funding local projects and sports teams through their community grant's program, we have helped to build vegetable gardens for the local community and always strived for the lowest environmental impact possible to ensure minimal disturbance for our neighbours.
HVO has provided for me and my family the ability to build our home and our lives within the Singleton LGA and my even time roster allows me time to help out at my child's school volunteering in the canteen and being an active participant of the P&C.
HVO supports numerous businesses around the hunter, and I believe the impact of not allowing this project to be approved would be severely detrimental to the wider community.
As part of my employment with HVO, I am able to donate a portion of my wage each fortnight directly to the Westpac rescue helicopter service. This government and community funded charity is extremely important to me as my family has unfortunately had to call upon this service twice in the past. HVO and all its employees have been long-time supporters of many charities, but it is the support of this charity and the service that it brings to our remote communities that I believe is one of the greatest community support projects that NSW mining and HVO has been able to bring to the Hunter Valley.
Please support this project to keep the Hunter community strong.

I am in support of the HVO south OC continuation project. The future of the Hunter Valley as well as NSW as a whole will benifit from the ongoing operation in regards to direct and indirect employment,community support, economic growth and infrastructure.

As an employee of HVO south this continuation is vital for myself and my young family.
The local suburbs surrounding us also benefit from this, bringing hundreds of people through the towns daily supporting local businesses and the community.

I like the ongoing process of the mine and would like to see it continue

I am a big supporter for the continuation of HVO south open cut. They provide thousands of jobs for people and also businesses they source resources from. HVO south have proven they can go about their operation without leaving a footprint.

I support the project because it will continue to provide jobs which In turn assists the local economy

The coal mining industry in the huntervalley supports local communities and businesses as well as local kids sporting and schools.
The workers in turn also support the local economy in many ways, if this was to be taken away many local small businesses will be lost.
The continuation of HVO will ensure local families keep their jobs and will also create more iobs and opportunites for new entrants to mining.

This project will mean a lot to the community of Singleton and surrounding areas. not to mention businesses and workers including myself that rely on that direct income that intern spend in the local area and communities.
Without it many workers will be out of work and have to move out of the area. The last thing we need is families having to leave the area.
HVO is very committed to the community and environment and will comply and go above to make sure that all requirements are met to ensure this project is able to be given the go ahead.
Please pass this project as it will have a detrimental effect not just for my life but for all at HVO and the community if not supported.
