Published as a letter to the Editor in the Singleton Argus

I work at MTW and am proud to do so. I also have a young family and hope to stay in the area for a long time. The future of MTW and mining in the Hunter Valley is therefore closely linked to my future and the future of my 35 strong contracting team. Anything I say will be correctly viewed as a biased comment, so I won't comment. All I ask of you is to look at the many positives that a business like MTW brings to the area and not just the negatives, as is most often reported by the media. Also, please consider that many negative comments about MTW come with a similar but reversed bias to anything that I might say.

Islington Village Community Group opposes the expansion of the Warkworth Mine for various reasons, our submission is attached.

Our primary concern is the break of promises not to mine the area in question, given and so easily revoked by a corporate giant!

The area proposed to be mined has already been the subject of an application to mine, which has been denied by the NSW Land & Environment Court. It is unconscionable that they should make this application and that DoPI should accept it, in defiance of the Court ruling.

I object strongly to this application which flies in the face of the Land and Environment Court decision disallowing mining in the proposed area.
The reasons are laid out clearly in the attached document.

I don't understand why or how the mine can apply for this. It was already denied in Court.
All the reasons for not allowing it, all of which I agree with are in the attached document...people, not profits !

I spent my formative years in Bulga, attending Singleton High School. My parents live in Bulga and it is still the hub for family occasions. I hope to be married here one day.
I've witnessed the anguish that my parents have experienced with the encroachment of the mine during the coal boom.
The Land and Environment decision gave me great hope that we have government and systems that can work for the people.
This application, if approved, gives the lie to that belief.
In my opinion, the judgement handed down by the Land and Environment Court says everything that needs to be said about it in great detail and provides the grounds for not approving this application.

Bulga is my mother-in-law's home and the place for many family occasions.
I was very distressed to see the changes that are occurring as a result of coal mine expansion.
When the appeal judgement was handed down, I thought it was a victory for the "real" people.
I'm very disappointed that the mine seeks to circumvent such a thorough and detailed analysis of the impacts of extending this mine.
It was rejected by the Court, but now they are re-applying...
The reasons it should not be approved are all in the judgement.
Dept of Planning should read this !!
