Batteries are dangerous, inefficient and have a negative effect on our environment. An environmental disaster!

I lodge my OBJECTION to this BESS project.
BESS and related renewable energy infrastructure are too damaging to the environment. Too unreliable. Too prone to fires.
Peter Dutton announced nuclear projects and this MUST be explored for the Lithgow community.

I OBJECT to this project. It is understood that Lithgow locals want nuclear power instead of BESS. The government should listen to the local community as per their needs and requests. This is a community happy to embrace nuclear; a reliable and clean energy source.
BESS is too dangerous with high fire risks. Renewable energy and its infrastructure is too damaging to communities, rural Australia, and the environment.

Put baseload on this site: Gas, Coal or Nuclear. We need 24/7 affordable electricity, not more greenwashing by Governments, superfunds and corporations.

I support any battery storage, Required for our future energy requirements.
Since solar and wind usually produce during the daytime also support base load nuclear power stations.

My oppositions to this proposed project are many but in particular I am very concerned about the use of industrial lithium batteries. They require many minerals to be mined, including in wilderness areas, that are toxic and, in some cases, require the use of slave labour to keep costs down. The recycling of thousands of tonnes of lithium batteries is not yet viable and, due to their short economic lives, will pollute our environments in a few short years. They pose fire and toxic smoke risks to fire-fighters and nearby residents and towns that will continue to occur despite the claims by the Proponent.

Despite decades of rolling out wind and solar plants in many countries the CO2 emissions still rise every year. Wind and solar projects, including this proposed stand alone BESS project, just make no difference. This BESS will increase atmospheric CO2 and increase our NEM electricity system costs to me and other end consumers. I object to any project that costs me heaps for no benefit at all. Don't approve this useless project!

Save our Surroundings objects to the BESS component of this proposed project for the following reasons, each of which requires a specific answer from the Proponent. Amalgamated and generic responses are unacceptable.

Our Objections
As we prepare this submission we are witnessing lithium battery fires in South Korea (20+ deaths so far) and Scotland with a whole town told to lockup their houses from the toxic smoke. One was a lithium battery manufacturer and the other reportedly a lithium battery recycling plant. We have had two BESS fires in Australia already, each burnt for 4 days. LG has recalled thousands of home solar lithium batteries because they are a threat of causing fires and explosions.
In Australia, as occurs overseas, EVs, e-bikes and e-scooters ignite unexpectedly and have destroyed property and injured people. Hundreds of these battery fires are increasingly occurring across Australia. How long before a major disaster occurs in regional or rural or urban Australia from another BESS fire, which fire-fighters cannot rapidly or safely extinguish because it is a chemical reaction that does not need oxygen to burn or explode?
The situation with the toxic nature of solar, wind and BESS works is so bad that Victorian Country Fire Authority banned fighting any solar works, BESS and wind works fires unless lives are at risk. The same policy applies in NSW for the CFS and NSWFR.
When will the Proponents of these industrial toxic and dangerous projects and the DPIE stop pretending such risks do not exist or can be mitigated against? The increased risks cannot be eliminated. Our lives and property are at risk!
On the 4 June 2024, according to AEMO data, during the four hour evening peak electricity demand across the NEM, by 9pm South Australia had all its electricity supplied by gas turbines (97%) and diesel generators (3%) despite having more than 50% of its generating capacity consisting of wind and solar generators backed up by industrial BESS works. That is, zero electricity from their "renewables".
Across the whole NEM wind supplied 1%, solar 0% and Batteries 0%. This is our future!! The AEMO is warning of blackouts this winter and in the future. Intermittent wind and solar cannot supply demand when required, including charging BESS batteries and pumping water uphill.
The precautionary principle must apply the proposed Sandy Creek project. It cannot achieve the claims made for it based on the evidence of just the few examples stated above.

Large scale batteries are damaging to the environment and to communities.
Batteries pose a fire risk to species and communities, and require land clearing which is also damaged habitats.
The idea of using batteries and renewables as base load power is ridiculous.

I object to this toxic fire hazzard that doesn’t even produce electricity.
Go Nuclear now as stop this madness.

Mt Piper BESS is a totally objectional, Environmentally Destructive, life threatening Fire Risk that is useless, weather dependent & a toxic contamination disaster - against the best interests of Australia.

I object to this project due to the large spatial footprint that is required. I am concerned about community impacts and lack of social license. The large-scale destruction of vegetation removal offers no long term benefits to the community.

I object to this project strongly. It must be a controlled action. The risk from battery malfunction resulting in a fire is too great for the surrounding people and animals. Lithium batteries are catching fire now on a regular basis. It won't be long before we see multiple deaths as a result of one of these fire.

Thank you for the opportunity to make a submission for the above project. I support this project.

Lithgow is in dire straits will coal and coal fired generation in the area will reduce and to cease. There is no timeline for continuation for the production of coal to supply the domestic market, Mt Piper Power Station which if and when this does comes in place we will have a loss of 2 major industries that support Lithgow.

As we know with the existing site at Mt Piper and with coal mining sites the historic and current environmental impacts to land, water and air.
Lithgows immediate needs are not only private enterprise but support from State and Federal government to invest in Lithgow with similar applications with this type of project. Mt Piper has adequate cleared land areas that could support numerous BESS infrastructures with little harm to the environment.
