Construction and maintenance may spread PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) from fire-fighting foams or materials. Such contamination is persistent, toxic, and harmful to soil, water, livestock, and human health. No sufficient PFAS prevention or monitoring strategies are present.

The EIS fails to meaningfully address decommissioning. Who will bear the cost decades from now when towers and cables need removal? Without clear plans or obligations, local communities could be left facing environmental blight or liability.

Transmission developers repeatedly claimed the route couldn’t change, yet it has been altered at least five times. This inconsistency erodes trust and suggests flexibility in planning for political convenience rather than community input. Such shifting claims are deceptive and unacceptable.

I object over the minimal and cursory community consultation. As noted in the NSW REZ inquiry, there has been “inadequate consultation” resulting in mental health strains and social fragmentation .
Locals were not properly engaged or consulted about route alternatives or the scale of impact, undermining social licence and democratic trust.

The required substations, including Dinawan and Gugaa, will consume and industrialise large areas. Agricultural land will be lost, fragmenting farm operations. The impact on pasture, cropping, and animal movement is significant and under-assessed.

The proposed 500 kV lines and substations will severely degrade scenic rural landscapes. Farmland views will be dominated by huge towers and industrial structures, affecting property values, tourism, and community character. The Environmental Impact Statement insufficiently addresses visual harm.

I raise serious concern about infrasound from high-voltage lines. Though often dismissed, long-term exposure to low-frequency noise may cause sleep disturbance, headaches, and stress, particularly for nearby residents. The environmental impact statement appears to neglect health assessments for infrasound.

This project claims to improve energy reliability, yet it chiefly connects intermittent solar and wind sources, which depend on weather conditions. On cloudy or windless days or during “wind droughts”, these sources can’t supply sufficient power.
Spending billions on infrastructure that doesn’t guarantee reliability during peak demand is misguided and fiscally irresponsible.

I object due to the immense cost blowouts associated with VNI West. Originally estimated at ~$3.9 billion, costs are now projected between $7.6 billion and potentially $11.4 billion . Such ballooning costs suggest an unreliable economic foundation and risk passing future burdens onto electricity consumers. The project’s scale and escalating price tag threaten its financial feasibility and undermine public trust in the transition.

I strongly object to the VNI West development on the grounds of elevated fire risk. As highlighted in the NSW Legislative Council report, communities within Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) face “devastating” bushfires, with land cleared for infrastructure likely increasing ignition points and hampering firefighting access and effectiveness . Transmission lines, substations, and maintenance tracks will introduce additional hazards. The fire-prone nature of the region, combined with climate-change-driven extremes, makes this a serious public safety concern. Ignoring such risks is irresponsible and potentially catastrophic.
