The proposed Hunter Indoor Sports Centre should be refused as it fails to demonstrate suitability of the Lambton site. The project would permanently remove valuable community open space, create unacceptable flooding and traffic risks, provide insufficient parking for its intended scale and have a significant impact on the 1200 students of Lambton High school. The proponent has failed to mitigate all of the major challenges being :flooding, traffic and parking and loss of amenity for local residents and the local high school. The development is inconsistent with regional planning objectives for the Hunter Park Precinct and does not deliver a genuine net community benefit. Please see my attached submission for further details

It is a wetland and easily floods. It is used every weekend for sports training and every day by several pe classes and children at lunch at Lambton high. It is also across the road from the NRL stadium and international hockey centre. This location is very poor, would be better on the abandoned gas works near Islington

I support this proposal as it will benefit the community in terms of health, fitness and building community. The venue will have a long lasting impact and provide opportunities for children and families to participate in healthy endeavours. The location within the sports precinct is ideal to support transport planning. The venue is desperately needed as the old stadium is not suitable to support major events and regular competitions.

Newcastle and the Hunter area are in desperate need of new basketball courts to support the consistent growth of the support and the development of young players. Currently, the youth in the Hunter Region are at a disadvantage in comparison to other NSW Metro and Regional facilities. As the 7th biggest city in the country and the growth that continues these facilities need to be built yesterday. We want kids of tech provide the facilities for them to do so .

There are about 150 football fields in Newcastle (excluding schools). There are SIX basketball courts.
Build more basketball courts, stadiums, you name it. Give basketball a chance.

Highly support this project. I will create a great space for the many indoor sports around Newcastle. While also providing a location for the kids at lambton high to play sport in a space that would not currently be used during wet weather.

To the approving authority for the proposed development of the Hunter Indoor Sports Centre (HISC),
I am writing to express my enthusiastic support for the development of the new Hunter Indoor Sports Centre in Newcastle. As a basketball player who has utilized the current Broadmeadow facility since 1998, I have witnessed firsthand its incredible but often strained capacity. This facility, despite its age, has accommodated hundreds, if not thousands, of athletes on a weekly basis, demonstrating the immense demand for indoor sports in our region.
However, the current facility is frequently at maximum capacity due to the lack of any comparable alternatives in the Newcastle area. While Newcastle has excellent provisions for outdoor sports, indoor sports remain underserved, despite being a preferred option for many participants. This project is long overdue and will address this significant shortfall.
The new HISC will not only provide a modern, high-quality venue that Newcastle can be proud of but will also be a major step toward fostering a healthier community. Its year-round capacity will allow for a substantial increase in the number of events and competitions, encouraging greater participation in a wide range of sports.
Furthermore, the aging Broadmeadow facility presents ongoing safety concerns. Minimum maintenance and issues like water leaking onto the courts during bad weather create a dangerous environment for all users. The proposed new centre will resolve these issues, providing a safe and reliable space for the community.
In summary, the development of the Hunter Indoor Sports Centre is a vital and necessary project for Newcastle. It will meet the escalating demand for indoor sporting facilities, enhance community health, and provide a safe, modern venue for athletes and community groups for years to come.

I object to the loss of green space, Broadmeadow is marked for a large residential development and with this all green areas need to be preserved. This area is also flood prone and should never be developed.

I believe the stadium the children use now is outdated and unsafe. They deserve better. All of our future athletes deserve better.

I am writing to express my strong support for the Hunter Indoor Sports Centre (HISC) as a local resident (Georgetown) and a parent of two junior basketball players.

The current stadium is no longer fit for purpose. It is in need of desperate repair, and does not have the volume of courts required for the number of basketballers. We regularly use the courts at Macquarie College and Hunter Sports High for weekly games, due to lack of courts at the stadium. Junior basketballers miss out on registration to play, as the current facilities are struggling to keep up with the growing interest in basketball. What a shame that local children are missing out in participating in a team sport, keeping them active and engaged.

The HISC will not only serve our young ballers, it will cater for other sports, as well as those with a disability, who cannot access the current stadium.

The small number of (vocal) local residents do not want the HISC in their backyard, however the number of Newcastle (and beyond) residents who will benefit from the HISC is enormous. Newcastle has an enormous amount of greenspace and the location of the proposed HISC is just a fraction of the greenspace that is available at Lambton (and on adjoining ovals to the proposed HISC).

The HISC would provide much-needed additional space for training and competition. It would enable more children and teens to play basketball in a well-equipped, modern facility close to home. With expanded facilities, our region would also be able to host larger tournaments and attract teams from across the state, providing further opportunities for local players to gain exposure and experience at higher levels of competition.

Regards,
Erin
