I am supportive of the HVO South Open Cut Continuation Project application. The mine has been operating for over 70 years, and as such HVO is an integral part of the Upper Hunter. The Upper Hunter has a proud history of coal mining, and the HVO project provides significant contribution to direct employment, support for local businesses, and support for local community groups and events. The mine is managed by experienced mining professionals, under strict environmental regulation regarding environmental impact management and rehabilitation completion. I am supportive of the opportunity for additional mine life of the project to provide extended opportunity to people and businesses community of the Hunter Valley.

I am in favour of the Hunter Valley Operations Continuation Project, and I believe that it should be allowed to proceed.

Background

In a world where energy demands are continually rising, it is crucial that we maintain a balanced approach to resource extraction and economic development. The Hunter Valley Operations Continuation Project represents an opportunity to secure jobs, support local economies, and provide essential resources while adopting more sustainable practices. It is essential to recognize that the transition to renewable energy will not happen overnight, and projects like this can facilitate that transition by providing necessary resources and funding for innovation.

Rationale for Continued Operations

Economic Benefits: The project will create and sustain jobs in the region, providing livelihoods for countless families. By allowing this project to proceed, the NSW Government can support local economies and ensure financial stability for communities that rely on the mining sector. The economic contribution of the Hunter Valley Operations cannot be overlooked, as it provides significant revenue for local businesses and services.
Energy Security: As Australia continues to transition towards renewable energy, coal remains an essential part of the energy mix during this transition. The Hunter Valley Operations can provide a reliable source of energy that supports the grid, ensuring that we meet our energy demands while renewable technologies are further developed and deployed.
Technological Advancements: The mining industry is evolving, and with it, the implementation of more sustainable practices and technologies. The project can incorporate advanced methods to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize environmental impact. By allowing this project to proceed, we can encourage innovation and the adoption of cleaner technologies within the industry.
Mitigation Strategies: Concerns regarding air quality and emissions can be addressed through effective mitigation strategies. The project can implement state-of-the-art dust suppression techniques and emissions control technologies to minimize air pollution. Open dialogue with stakeholders, including the local community and Aboriginal groups, can lead to the development of comprehensive plans that respect cultural heritage while addressing environmental concerns.
Biodiversity Management: The project can incorporate biodiversity management plans that aim to protect local ecosystems and wildlife. Rather than halting operations, we can focus on responsible mining practices that include habitat restoration and conservation efforts. This approach can lead to a net positive impact on the environment by creating dedicated conservation areas.
Global Energy Demand: As a nation, Australia has a responsibility to contribute to global energy needs while balancing environmental concerns. By continuing operations at Hunter Valley, we can supply coal to nations that still heavily rely on it for energy production, thus supporting their transition to cleaner energy sources in the long term.
Conclusion

In conclusion, the Hunter Valley Operations Continuation Project presents an opportunity for economic growth, energy security, and technological advancement. While it is essential to address environmental concerns, it is equally important to recognize the role that responsible resource extraction plays in our economy and energy landscape. By supporting this project, we can pave the way for a more sustainable future while meeting current energy demands.

I am writing as a local resident of the nearby township and as a parent raising a young family in this community. I would like to offer my strong support for the HVO Continuation Project.

Living in this area, I see firsthand the positive contributions that HVO—and Glencore more broadly—make to our local community. The project provides stable employment, supports local businesses, and brings investment into services and infrastructure that directly benefit families like mine. HVO’s presence has helped sustain our township, creating opportunities for both the current and next generation.

Beyond economic benefits, I have been impressed by HVO’s commitment to acting responsibly. The focus on environmental management, land rehabilitation, and ongoing engagement with community members provides reassurance that they are invested in the long-term future and wellbeing of our region.

My family and I value the vibrancy and stability that projects such as HVO bring to our lives. I believe that continuing this project is essential for maintaining the prosperity, social cohesion, and sustainable development of our region.

Thank you for considering my submission and for giving a voice to local residents who value the positive role that HVO and Glencore play in our community.

I am writing in strong support of the Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) Continuation Project.
I have lived in Singleton my entire life and have seen first-hand how vital HVO is to our region. The operation provides a large number of stable, well-paying job opportunities for local people.
If the extension is not approved, a huge number of employees and contractors—many of whom are local families—will be out of work. This would have a significant and lasting impact on our community, our economy, and the livelihoods of countless households.
The continuation of HVO is essential to maintaining local employment, sustaining community services, and ensuring economic stability for Singleton and the wider Hunter Valley.

HVO in the Hunter Valley has a track record of environmentally responsible operations that have overall benefited the local community and NSW economy for over 50 years. It was some of the first open cut coal mined in the Hunter Valley, and given the quality of the HVO coal, it should be the last coal mined in 2050.

HVO's contribution to the upper Hunter communities is second to none.
They inject billions of dollars into the local and Australian economies and communities.
They provide jobs directly to more than 1500 people (myself included), and to more than 600 other contractors and businesses.
They have put significant effort into planning and refining their plans to allow the mine to continue benefiting thousands of individuals and families, while also proactively caring for the local environment now, and into the future, for example with the plans to reduce the life of the mine fractionally, while also greatly reducing emissions, impacts on the environment and continuing successful rehabilitation.
To say that not supporting HVOs continuations projects would be absolutely absurd, unwise or irrational, is an understatement.
