On 22 June 2023, NSW Planning issued an Official Caution to Warkworth Mining Ltd (WML) for exceeded noise impact assessment criteria at three noise monitoring locations for the Warkworth Continuation Project on 20 July 2022. WML had failed to implement their approved Noise Management Plan on the night of 20 July 2022 in the lead up to the exceedances. WML have since implemented measures to ensure compliance with their management plan and NSW Planningcontinues to monitor WML's noise reporting data and implementation of the NMP.

On a personal level the impact on my family would be huge. My husband would no longer be employed. At an age of 53 finding work elsewhere would be extremely hard. The stress of the unknown future and length of his employment takes it's toll on a daily basis.
Many young families who work in the Warkworth- Mt Thorley mine have taken out large loans to buy houses or build in the area. They have travelled from all over Australia to settle in our beautiful Hunter Valley. If the extension is not granted and the mine closes many families will leave the area to seek employment elsewhere. Businesses will close and the Hunter Valley will no longer be the prosperous region it is now.
The Mount Thorley- Warkworth mine adheres to the noise restrictions, air pollution levels are kept under control and measures are in place for any extreme conditions regarding the weather. They follow their land rehabilitation planning and are very conscious to keep the impact on locals to a mere minimal.
The closure of this pit would, in my opinion, be a huge mistake for our Valley.

I submit that Rio Tinto's application to expand its Warkworth mine should be deferred or refused on the grounds that details in the company's environmental impact statement for the project are substantially disputed by members of the Bulga community and may be untrue.
Until Rio Tinto's claims can be properly investigated and verified from current, independent and reliable sources, a decision on this project should be deferred to prevent potential damage to the fragile ecology of the Warkworth Sands Woodland, and to the quality of life and economic wellbeing of affected residents.
I also request a requirement for Rio Tinto to improve and address community consultation, and to include the results of previous consultation in their EIS.
