Penalty Notice issued to Centennial Mandalong Pty Limited (SSD-5144) Central Coast LGA
On 18 March 2022, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Centennial Mandalong Pty Limited (Centennial) for failure to comply with operation noise criteria at their Mandalong Coal Mine. Operation noise criteria were exceeded at two attended noise monitoring locations on 6 December 2021. The exceedances of criteria were determined to be the result of ventilation fans operating on the Mandalong South Surface Site (MSSS). Centennial are actively working on engineering controls to reduce any ongoing impacts and to ensure that noise levels remain compliant.

I would particularly like to point out Mandalong Mine's excellent record with regard to our ongoing committment to environmental issues and impacts, which has occurred since mining under Mandalong and surrounding areas over the last decade.
As an employee of over 30 years experience in the mining industry, I have been involved in consultation at community meetings to address any concerns raised about mining under the Mandalong Valley..
The Mandalong Mine's Environmental Department have addressed these concerns, and are committed to continued consultation and mediation with the community should any future concerns be raised.
Mandalong Mine employs over 300 people, the majority of whom live and raise their families in the local area. To ensure their continued employment, this project needs to proceed.
It is important to mention the support of loal businesses and sporting clubs that employees of Mandalong Mine provide. If the mine ceased to continue, this financial support of local businesses would be greatly affected.
In my case, I have raised my three children in Western Lake Macquarie, all of whom have been involved in local sport and cultural activities. I, myself, have continued to swim with a local masters swimming cliub, and the financial support from Mandalong Colliery has helped our club to flourish.
The majority of coal extracted from Mandalong Colliery is used in yet another Two locally situated Power Stations to generate electricity.Contract prices are a lot lower than with export coal, and this assists in keeping NSW state electricity prices lower, compared to other countries. The transportation of our coal to the power srtations has little impact on our environment, as it is transported by conveyors underground.through existing workings, and then via an enclosed conveyor system. It is not trucked along local roads.
In conclusion, I remain committed to the Mandalong mine project, as well as to minimisation of impacts on the environment, through continued quality improvements and community consultation, so that the best outcomes can be achieved for the local economy and the community as a whole.

Because I work at the mine I see that we take the environment very seriously and that our subsidence has very little impact on the surface.
It is very important that Mandalong keep going past 2016 so that we keep employed and keep putting money into the local community.

* I am a current employee at Mandalong mine. The Project (if approved) will ensure that I have employment until 2035. This is important to me as I support my young family with my salary income.
* The Mandalong Mine has a proven record of extracting the coal resource under the Mandalong valley with minimal surface impacts. This proven mine design will continue for the Mandalong Southern Extension with continued minimal impacts on surface infrastructure & dwellings, ecology and surface waterways of the Mandalong valley area.
* The Mandalong Mine also employs many local contracting firms and engages the services of many local businesses in the Morisset, Cooranbong and Dora Creek areas.
* The Mandalong Mine has a proven track record of operating with minimal environmental and social impacts. As the Mandalong Southern Extension Project can be considered a low risk project and due to the many economic benefits for the local and regional economies the NSW Government should support and approve this project.

My position at this mine has also supported our raising around $.25m over the last 7 years for the local rescue helicopter, plus necessary funds for our local RFS units.
