Mod 4 - Cooranbong Coal Stockpile Extension

I support the proposed project as it will contribute to the efficient operation of Mandalong Mine. Mandalong Mine supports the well-paid direct employment for over 500 persons in the greater Lake Macquarie region, and contributes to local, state and federal public revenue through rates, royalties and other taxes, which in turn supports roads, hospital and other public services. Any environmental or social impacts that the proposed project causes in my view are well outweighed by the benefits of the continued efficient operation of Mandalong Mine.

The proposed modification to extend the stockpile at the Cooranbong Surface Facility (CES) is a project that will significantly enhance the management of Mandalong coal to both domestic and export markets via the CES. This extension is crucial for maintaining the efficiency of coal distribution, particularly to Eraring Power Station and other key customers. By ensuring that sufficient coal is available, the modification directly supports the stability of the Mandalong operation, safeguarding employment.

This project will assist the coal mining industry maintain jobs and a presence in the short to medium term whilst we transition away from fossil fuels. Expanding the stockpile will not materially impact the environment or community however not allowing businesses to run or constraining them to not be productive and efficient will have impacts felt across the nation.

The extension of the stockpile will not have a greater impact on the local community then the current arrangement. The extension will ensure the safety of the mine workers employment into the future also helping the local economy.

The careful planning and consideration evident in MOD4 demonstrate a commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible resource management. It is crucial that we continue to support projects that enhance local infrastructure while adhering to stringent environmental standards.
I encourage the authorities to approve MOD4, as it will not only contribute positively to our local economy but also ensure Mandalong Cooranbong remains a vibrant and sustainable community for years to come.

As the demand for reliable energy sources continues to rise, expanding the Coorangbong stockpile capacity is crucial to ensuring an uninterrupted supply, particularly during periods of peak demand. This extension will play a key role in bolstering national energy security and enhancing the overall stability of the energy grid.

Furthermore, the expansion of the stockpile facility is directly linked to the sustained viability of local mining operations, enabling the retention of existing employment levels and providing ongoing support to the local economy. Without this extension, the mine’s ability to operate at full capacity and deliver stable employment could be significantly jeopardized.

The stockpile is purely for export purposes so increasing the size adds no advantage to the domestic market.
