Enforcements

On 22 June 2023, NSW Planning issued an Official Caution to Warkworth Mining Ltd (WML) for exceeded noise impact assessment criteria at three noise monitoring locations for the Warkworth Continuation Project on 20 July 2022.  WML had failed to implement their approved Noise Management Plan on the night of 20 July 2022 in the lead up to the exceedances. WML have since implemented measures to ensure compliance with their management plan and NSW Planningcontinues to monitor WML's noise reporting data and implementation of the NMP.

I have been an employee at Mt Thorley Warkworth mine for several years and am dependent on the extension being approved. I am in my later years of employment and feel that with the current economic climate I would not be able to secure another job if I was to lose my current position. I am sure there are many other employees in the same situation.
There are 1300 jobs depending on the extension for Mt Thorley Warkworth mine and the impact on these people and also on the surrounding regions communities & industries from the loss of these jobs would be devastating.

Not supporting the proposal would be economic suicide for the local community and beyond compared to the interests of just a few. I am at retirement age and would personally benefit from the mine closure, however, the bigger picture is critical. The value of my property had reduced and would continue to do so. Importantly, Singleton has become a poorer rural town. Housing vacancy rates and job prospects continue to worsen as the "closure" hangs over our heads. The recent Vale experience supports these views.

I have moved myself & my family to rutherford with the future in mind for our family. My wife, children & i support this extention as we also support local businesses that we shop at, Sporting clubs & local schools that my three children attend. I would like to see a long term future for us here but have to say that all of that would most definately be in jeperdy if the mount thorley warkworth extention is not approved.

My job and the jobs of 1300 others depend on Mount Thorley Warkworth which has been part of the Singleton and surround communities for more than 30 years. The impact on my family and the families of others who work at the mine would be greatly affected if it is not approved to continue mining. But the impact doesn't stop with the people directly employed by Mount Thorley Warkworth or with the countless number of companies that support the operation and not to mention the impact on the retail and services sectors which benefit greatly from the money spent in our local communities.

RTCA sets the standard for responsible operation of coal mines in the Hunter Valley and MTW deserves the communities support. As a resident of Singleton I support the mines continued activity and appreciate the significant contribution it makes to the local economy.

In excess of 1000 direct and numerous indirect jobs depend on Mount Thorley Warkworth which has been part of the community for more than 30 years. Any negative ruling will have devistating impact ontheir families and businesses who have been in the community as long at MTW..

I work for the Regional Assett Management group of RioTinto & live localy in the Hunter Valley. I strongly support the extension to Mount Thorley Warkworth as it will form an important part to the future local economy & maintain the current number of jobs at the mine. This region will not exist in the future if we dont have an efficient mining industry. With some of the higher cost mines already closing I think MTW should be given every chance to succeed well into the future & continue to support the community

1300 jobs depend on Mount Thorley Warkworth which has been part of the Singleton community for more than 30 years. I can only imagine what the impact would be to families who have been in the region for generations if it is not approved to continue mining. But the impact doesn't stop with the people directly employed by MTW: in 2013 alone we spent over $188 million with local businesses in the Upper Hunter. Without the continuation, impacts will be felt right across the Hunter region".

The Mount Thorley Warkworth mine provides direct employment for 1300 people and, indirectly many more through commercial agreements with businesses across the Hunter Valley region.

A major blow to employment and families would be dealth by not supporting the ongoing development of the Mount Thorley Warkworth mine.

I have been working at MTW for 6 years. In this time I have setup my family in the valley and grown to love the community, it is now our home.

The extension means a lot to my family, without it would mean a loss of my job. Given the current economic climate, their are no prospects of employment in the mining industry in the area. Thus my family would be forced to move interstate.

In my role at MTW, I see the amount of effort and time spent by our employees managing and monitoring our environmental impacts. The employee's and company are concerned about our environmental impact and I feel we are world class in terms of understanding and reacting to our noise impacts on the Bulga community.

Common sense needs to prevail, the Bulga community and the mine can co-exist.

Thus I am in strong support of the extension being approved.

Mining is a significant contributor to employment in the Hunter region, extending from those directly employed by the mine operators, contractors & sub-contractors to large and small business who directly and indirectly support those employees.

With a reduction in the number of mines operating there will obvously be less jobs, which flows right down to the coffee shop and lunch shop employees.

I have lived and worked in this area for over 30 years and have seen the ups and downs which is the nature in mining. Never have I witnessed an affect on the community as much as with this particular coal climate.
The government needs to support the Warkworth continuation as well as any other extensions in the coal mining industry as they not only supply a product which there is demand for but also support the communities in which they are based. It is not only the mines employees that will be affected through loss of jobs but the entire community which is already suffering severely.

Going to work with the uncertainty that there may not be a job for your next year must be difficult to live with. I feel for my colleagues at MTW.

I support the extension of MTW. Having worked for Rio Tinto for the past 10 years in the Brisbane office and worked closely with the employess at MTW, I know that they are working hard every day to work within strict mining/environmental regulations. I feel that opponents to the extension who may have already benefitted from the mining industry in the past should not deny the current 1300 employess and employess in the future the prospect of having jobs to support their families and the surrounding communities.

Any negative impact incurred by the expansion of MTW would pale in comparison to not allowing the expansion and hence closure of MTW. 1300 people directly impacted as well as many local businesses. The area needs all the help possible to sustain employment, particularly in these tough times that mining is experiencing. The sensible decision is to approve the expansion and protect jobs and investment in the area.
