On 22 June 2023, NSW Planning issued an Official Caution to Warkworth Mining Ltd (WML) for exceeded noise impact assessment criteria at three noise monitoring locations for the Warkworth Continuation Project on 20 July 2022. WML had failed to implement their approved Noise Management Plan on the night of 20 July 2022 in the lead up to the exceedances. WML have since implemented measures to ensure compliance with their management plan and NSW Planningcontinues to monitor WML's noise reporting data and implementation of the NMP.

The Warkworth extension is supported by all here except a very vocal few. The site use has minimal impact on surrounding agricultural areas, and Warkworth mine is sensitive to its environmental responsibilities.
I am a local land owner not employed by Warkworth, I absolutely support the approval of the extension and the continuation of industry in our busy and vibrant Hunter Valley. I hope that reason will prevail.

A quick drive down the main-street of Singleton shows the impact job losses and project delays has had on the community. This has a range of secondary impacts including reduction of attendances at schools, patronage of pubs and shops. It is clear the economy of Singleton has a level of dependence on mining - something which should be considered in this application, along with strategies about how to minimise this dependence to prepare for the inevitable closure of Mount Thorley Warkworth, hopefully decades away.
I believe it is possible to strike a balance, and don't believe that my husband's job nor the prosperity of Singleton should come at the cost of Bulga and the quality of life of Bulga residents. One of the great qualities of the Hunter Valley coal industry is its ability to innovate and improve its safety and environmental performance. Although the project is within modelled compliance levels for Air Quality and Noise, I believe this would be cold comfort being left awake at night to the rumbling of dump trucks and other machinery. Considering how much Rio Tinto have publically promoted how important this continuation of the mine and its 1300 workers are to them I have every faith in their ability to adapt, innovate and deliver a mine which focuses on beyond compliance environmental performance if the Department choose to enforce these requirements to ensure the future of the village of Bulga and the mine. Using compulsory or voluntary acquisition as an `out' for undisciplined and uninspired mining practices, is a lazy way out and will only lead to the currently small but vibrant town of Bulga turning into a ghost town.
Again I reiterate my support for a consent approval which will ensure the continuation of 1300 jobs at the Mount Thorley Warkworth Mine, an independent and prosperous Singleton and populated and peaceful Bulga Village.

We currently employ some 60 people. Our work force has been long term, with the Majority of these people being with our Company for over 10 years.
These employees live throughout the lower Hunter Valley region, including Maitland, Cessnock, Kurri and the Newcastle & Lake Macquarie council areas. Like all companies associated with the mining sector we have suffered in the current economic downturn we have been forced to reduce our workforce by 40%. This has been difficult for our workforce and their families, as some of these people are still finding it difficult to find fulltime work. We have had a close working relationship with Mt Thorley Warkworth over a long period of time, this Coal & Allied mine is one of our Major customers and any downturn in their work load will have a dramatic effect on our Company, this in turn, would again put dramatic pressure on our already smaller reduced workforce.
Should this submission be rejected and MTW were forced to scale back operations or in effect close completely there would be definitely further job losses within our organisation, obviously effecting our local community. This downturn in work for Temmco also has a ripple effect for not only our direct employees but the many suppliers and subcontractors that will deal with and their associated Families. Being a local company dealing with local people ths closure or down scaling of MTW has a significant effect on the whole Newcastle Hunter Region. So as a local company we are fully behind this MTW submission and have grave fears if it does not go through for the continued operation of this mine and the obvious effect on the community with the loss of some 1300 direct jobs and the major job losses that will occur in the some 600 odd businesses that derive work from MTW

The continuation of MTW will support the 1300 direct employees and also the flow on effects of this operation to local communities.
MTW are required to operate within the environmental guidelines and law of the government and Rio Tinto. Rio Tinto will operate MTW in this way.
