Enforcements

On 22 June 2023, NSW Planning issued an Official Caution to Warkworth Mining Ltd (WML) for exceeded noise impact assessment criteria at three noise monitoring locations for the Warkworth Continuation Project on 20 July 2022.  WML had failed to implement their approved Noise Management Plan on the night of 20 July 2022 in the lead up to the exceedances. WML have since implemented measures to ensure compliance with their management plan and NSW Planningcontinues to monitor WML's noise reporting data and implementation of the NMP.

It's devastating to see the Hunter slowing down the way it is.. people losing their jobs in the mining industry, then the industries that directly support it, followed by all local business - clothing stores, cafes and restaurants, local builders and tradesmen. The thriving economy across all sectors here is underpinned by the mines.
The Warkworth extension is supported by all here except a very vocal few. The site use has minimal impact on surrounding agricultural areas, and Warkworth mine is sensitive to its environmental responsibilities.
I am a local land owner not employed by Warkworth, I absolutely support the approval of the extension and the continuation of industry in our busy and vibrant Hunter Valley. I hope that reason will prevail.

Without jobs for these 1300 miners and not to mention the flow on effect for local businesses, the huge amount of unemployment will have a catastrophic effect on the local towns, especially Singleton.

Please allow this Warkworth continuation to be approved!

Legra Engineering Mackay has been a customer to MTW for 18 years and we have had a service branch employing 4 locals in Singleton to support our products durring this time. 45% of the Singleton Branch's turn over comes from MTW's custom. To lose this should there be a mine closeure would mean job losses within our organisation from both Singleton and Mackay branches.

The continuation of MTW's mining operation is key to the viability of our organisation.

My sons and I work in the mining industry in the Hunter Valley and my family supports the expansion of Mount Thorley Warkworth. The impacts on the local region would be significant should MTW not continue to operate. The closure of the pit would impact not only the 1300 workers and their families but local businesses. Not only would mine workers lose their jobs, further job losses would occur in businesses that support the mine and those the mine workers support in their personal lives.

I'm in favour the extension because I will be able to continue having a great life with my family that MTW provides. My family is just 1of thousands that relies on MTW . I'm in favour of the extension.

I would like to submit my support for the continuation of my husband's job at Mount Thorley Warkworth. We both live and work in the Hunter Valley, but without ongoing employment for him we would be forced to leave the Hunter due to a lack of other employment prospects - something many of our friends and colleagues have already had to do.

A quick drive down the main-street of Singleton shows the impact job losses and project delays has had on the community. This has a range of secondary impacts including reduction of attendances at schools, patronage of pubs and shops. It is clear the economy of Singleton has a level of dependence on mining - something which should be considered in this application, along with strategies about how to minimise this dependence to prepare for the inevitable closure of Mount Thorley Warkworth, hopefully decades away.

I believe it is possible to strike a balance, and don't believe that my husband's job nor the prosperity of Singleton should come at the cost of Bulga and the quality of life of Bulga residents. One of the great qualities of the Hunter Valley coal industry is its ability to innovate and improve its safety and environmental performance. Although the project is within modelled compliance levels for Air Quality and Noise, I believe this would be cold comfort being left awake at night to the rumbling of dump trucks and other machinery. Considering how much Rio Tinto have publically promoted how important this continuation of the mine and its 1300 workers are to them I have every faith in their ability to adapt, innovate and deliver a mine which focuses on beyond compliance environmental performance if the Department choose to enforce these requirements to ensure the future of the village of Bulga and the mine. Using compulsory or voluntary acquisition as an `out' for undisciplined and uninspired mining practices, is a lazy way out and will only lead to the currently small but vibrant town of Bulga turning into a ghost town.

Again I reiterate my support for a consent approval which will ensure the continuation of 1300 jobs at the Mount Thorley Warkworth Mine, an independent and prosperous Singleton and populated and peaceful Bulga Village.

I support the mine extension, the current state of the towns employment situation means that without it we are going to suffer. Some of the Bulga residents who oppose have a lot of their livliehood in mining companies and so i do not understand how they think their family businesses will survive without it. They may have money to fall back on but a lot of us dont and without these jobs our town will become a ghost town. I understand that their is an environmental impact but right now i do not see that as more important then the wellbeing of the families in this town who are suffering right now and will continue to without this opportunity.

Temmco is a wholly Australian owned company which has been established for over 35yrs in Rutherford. We have been servicing the Mining & Power Sector during this time. The core of our business is Maintenance Engineering Services.
We currently employ some 60 people. Our work force has been long term, with the Majority of these people being with our Company for over 10 years.
These employees live throughout the lower Hunter Valley region, including Maitland, Cessnock, Kurri and the Newcastle & Lake Macquarie council areas. Like all companies associated with the mining sector we have suffered in the current economic downturn we have been forced to reduce our workforce by 40%. This has been difficult for our workforce and their families, as some of these people are still finding it difficult to find fulltime work. We have had a close working relationship with Mt Thorley Warkworth over a long period of time, this Coal & Allied mine is one of our Major customers and any downturn in their work load will have a dramatic effect on our Company, this in turn, would again put dramatic pressure on our already smaller reduced workforce.
Should this submission be rejected and MTW were forced to scale back operations or in effect close completely there would be definitely further job losses within our organisation, obviously effecting our local community. This downturn in work for Temmco also has a ripple effect for not only our direct employees but the many suppliers and subcontractors that will deal with and their associated Families. Being a local company dealing with local people ths closure or down scaling of MTW has a significant effect on the whole Newcastle Hunter Region. So as a local company we are fully behind this MTW submission and have grave fears if it does not go through for the continued operation of this mine and the obvious effect on the community with the loss of some 1300 direct jobs and the major job losses that will occur in the some 600 odd businesses that derive work from MTW

I support the submission from Rio Tinto Coal to extend the life of Mount Thorley Warkworth Mine.

The continuation of MTW will support the 1300 direct employees and also the flow on effects of this operation to local communities.

MTW are required to operate within the environmental guidelines and law of the government and Rio Tinto. Rio Tinto will operate MTW in this way.

The MTW extension is obviously vital to the 1300 employees directly effected but the downstream effects to local buisnesses could be far worse then ever imagined. There is way too much at stake for this mining extension not to be approved. This surely has to happen.

I rely on the continued operation of MTW for my employment. A majority of our environmental monitoring is based at this site and without would most certainly cost me my job.

3 years ago I left the Royal Astralian Navy after 21yrs service. I persued a career in the mining industry. I have been a contractor operator since leaving the service with the thought that Warkworth would be a viable Mine that would support my family and friends within the site. If this submission does not get approved, there will be some serious outcomes. As there is not a lot of employment in the industry at the moment, a lot of people will be unemployed and putting more strain on the government / Centrelink.
