Enforcements

On 22 June 2023, NSW Planning issued an Official Caution to Warkworth Mining Ltd (WML) for exceeded noise impact assessment criteria at three noise monitoring locations for the Warkworth Continuation Project on 20 July 2022.  WML had failed to implement their approved Noise Management Plan on the night of 20 July 2022 in the lead up to the exceedances. WML have since implemented measures to ensure compliance with their management plan and NSW Planningcontinues to monitor WML's noise reporting data and implementation of the NMP.

I have worked at MTW for the last 3 years, moving my family down from Tamworth to a property we purchased at Greta. Real estate in the upper Hunter we found was much more expensive than Tamworth so we found all of our savings went into our purchase, making our fortnightly mortgage repayments very high and can only be managed on my current salary or similar. If this Mt Thorley Warkworth Continuation does not go ahead we will have to declare bankruptcy as permanent jobs in the mining industry right across Australia are none existent at the moment
After working in the mining industry for the last 14 years as a contractor this job was my first permanent position with an actual mining company and it was and is the job I thought would take me through to retirement so we as a family put all our eggs in one basket. Everything depends on MTW getting this Continuation. I speak to work colleges on a daily basis and we are all in the same boat witch says to me the affects this will have across the Hunter will be very wide spread and will affect a lot of lives from state, federal and local governments right down to local business and the families that live and support the communities

I support the modification because my husband and brother in law work at this mine. We have recently moved to the hunter valley and plan to stay here and raise our family in the future. The mine puts money into the local communities and for sporting facilities which our families use and are greatful for.

The Hunter Valley relies on coal mining as well as other industries to continue as a prosperous society. Many people will suffer if closure of any coal mine was to happen. There are people who are against continuation of MTW who have been more than happy to take money from the mine in wages or as service providers, double standards.

Without the mine and expansion what future is there for the family's and community's I have been in the situation of my husband unemployed for 7 months 2 kids a 3rd on the way and building a new home it scares the hell out of me that we may be back in that situation again if this expansion does not go ahead .

My name is Mel and I have worked at Mount Thorley Warkworth mine for the past 3years as a Resco contractor crib relief haul truck operator. As a single mum to two young boys I rely solely on my employment at MTW as our only means of income. My job as a crib relief operator has provided financial stability for my family while still allowing flexibility to raise my children. Coal and Allied, Rio Tinto MTW and the contract companies also provide much needed financial support to sporting groups and the local communities all of which would not be possible without the ongoing employment of the 1300 miners at MTW. I strongly support the Warkworth continuation project and the future of mining in this region and look forward to continuing my career in the mining sector!

Its not just the 1300 employees that are affected if the extension is knocked back there will be thousands of other people in the wider community affected as well

Mt Thorley Warkworth provides direct work for the 13 people in my team and an additional 4 in another department.
Our business is heavily involved in the Coal Handling Preparation Plant maintenance and this approval, if unsuccessful could mean the loss of up to 3 positions within the company I work of along with the thousands of other contracting staff which help support this mine.

I would personally like for the approval for Mount Thorley Warkworth Expansion to go ahead due to my employment at the mine.
I am currently working as a contractor at MTW and it is the main source of income for my Wife and two young children.

It is common knowledge that there is a decline in work oppertunities in the Hunter Valley due to the drop in coal price which has effected the mining industry.

If the extension at MTW does not go ahead it will have personal impact on my family forcing me to seek employment elsewhere.

My submission is to support the expansion operation at Mount Thorley Warkworth.

I work at Mt Thorley Warkworth as a fitter repairing the mobile plant equipment. I'm employed by Acs, a local contracting company.

I am a father in a family of three (soon to be four). My family depends on my income to pay our mortgage, food and bills. My wife works part time but as we are expecting more children she will stop work, making my income absolutely essential.

If the extension isn't approved my position, I believe, will be one of the first to go, making my family's future a lot harder. Solid employment is hard to find at present and I'm extremely worried about what could happen if I'm unemployed.

I support the extension of MTW as it is an existing business / mine. The rejection of this application will not only affect my family's livelihood, but it will also affect over 80 employees I have in my team at work. Apart from this, the assessments that have been undertaken show there will be minimal negative impact on the environment / community if the extension goes ahead. I am in full support of the extension for the community to sustain jobs, employments and business in the local area.

I am a trainer /assessor at mount Thorley Warkworth mine I have been employed the last 8.5 years, having come from small business I was amazed how much time and money are invested in the environment at the mine ,the job I had previously not so much , unfortunately the media are more interested in the david vs goliath angle, on one (of many ) occasions reporting about dust blowing up on a particularly windy day but not disclosing that the mine had shut down production for the day to cut down on dust and that our emergency response team were helping local brigades fight fires in surrounding areas , this was not reported only the dust which due to extreme conditions was blowing from everywhere not just the mines. as an employee all we want is a far go and for the public to know the whole story not just a media beat up , the organization leading the charge to stop the mining extension say they speak for the whole town of bulga where in reality this is not so. having worked with many people who live in the bulga area most are not even invited to the meetings about opposing the mine extention and a few people spearheading the charge either worked at the mine or made a lot of money of the mines through business dealings over the years ,again the media choose not to make this public knowledge , again david vs goliath makes for good news , as an employee I may seem to have a bias view but knowing a lot of people in singleton who are worried about their businesses and employment if the mines close down, are they also regarded as bias , I don't think so , just worried about their jobs and their families future, as I stated before the steps that mining take to limit their environmental footprint would surprise most people but due to media beat up the general public believe we just destroy the environment and move on, the people I talk to don't even know we rehabilitate the land and this is just a small part of what goes into environmental upkeep in a mine , if this mine lives on I don't believe it will spell the end of the small town of bulga but if it shuts down I do strongly believe that it will spell the end of the much larger town of singleton and surrounding areas, something the hunter valley cannot afford to let happen.

My husband works at mt thorley warkworth , and is the sole income provider for our family of 4 . If the extension does not go through we will have to up root the family and head away from the area in search of work ,this would be devastating as our family lives here , the extension will keep employment in the area and family's in the area.. with good management plans put in place both Bulga and Mt thorley warkworth can co exist...

My son works at Mt Thorley Warkworth , he works hard to support his family of 4 ,and needs this extension to be excepted for him to keep his job.. He and his family actively support his community ,eg schools, shops sports clubs and restaurants. If the extension does not go through my son will loose his job ,income and will likely be forced to have to leave the area in search of employment along with many other family's . this would be a great loss to the community's and family's that love them very much...

The company I work for is one of several contracting companies who employee a large workforce at the Mount Thorley - Warkworth operation. This number is one not included in the 1300 workers and will be heavily effected by the choice to not allow the mine to expand and as a result cut its workforce. Without this position myself and my fellow co-workers at ACS will be out of a job and need to find work most likely interstate. Please allow the continuation of the MTW Site.
