Enforcements

On 22 June 2023, NSW Planning issued an Official Caution to Warkworth Mining Ltd (WML) for exceeded noise impact assessment criteria at three noise monitoring locations for the Warkworth Continuation Project on 20 July 2022.  WML had failed to implement their approved Noise Management Plan on the night of 20 July 2022 in the lead up to the exceedances. WML have since implemented measures to ensure compliance with their management plan and NSW Planningcontinues to monitor WML's noise reporting data and implementation of the NMP.

I believe the social and economic benefits far outway what seems to be a moderate risk in extending the operation. This risk can be controlled as it always has been at this and many other opertations in the world.

Rio Tinto have displayed integrity and ownership as resonsible mine operators, always considering the effects of mining on the environment and near neighbours.

I strongly support the continuation of Warkworth Mine

MTW provides many jobs in a climate where employers all over the country are forced to reduce their staff numbers. There has been an environmental assessment done and when considering the amount of offsets proposed (several times the size of the land proposed to be disturbed) and also the stringent environmental regulations in place at MTW, a positive overall impact on the environment can be expected. The economic benefit to the region is clear and demonstrated, as is the benefit to thousands of people in the local community, both directly and indirectly.

I support the conitnuation of the Mt Thorley Warkworth project due to the significant benefit it will provide for both job security and economic stability for the Singleton and wider upper hunter communities.

1300 workers, their families and 600 businesses need this approval for Mount Thorley Warkworth. We have enough people being put out of work, with a continuous stream of redundancy announcements within the industry and supporting businesses. Our towns and businesses in the Hunter are already struggling with the mining downturn, we don't need to add more pressure to the local communities.
Mount Thorly Warkworth provides a lot of support for the community and will do so for many years to come provided it is given the opportunity.

The MTW story has many implications for the Hunter Valley if not successful in this application.
The precedence this sets for the mining community in general if it was to be declined.
The job losses from the mine but also from supporting vendors
Impacts to the racing industry locally through various means
Impacts to Vineyards
Currently there are more than enough challenges in our industry. Coal price, AUD etc. Govenment needs to support businesses and drive not only MTW but the industry as a whole to be competetive on the international stage.

I see in my community the shear volume of the knock on effect of losses in the coal mining industry. The impacts to the business and youth employement is very stark for peoples respect for them selves and sometime it is very difficult to see a claer way out of finacial emotional and family situations.
In Emerald i have seen what the down turn has done and the imminent closure of nearby mines. The talk of closures and mothballing of resources is constantly on peoples minds and takes their mind of the roles at hand and the flow on effects on injuries etc from not concentrating on the job at hand. If people can get a role somewhere else it very often needs people to travel long distances and and be away from their families for extended periods which adds pressure to the home situation. In the Bowen Basin road safety is greatly impacted with the amount of travel and vehicle accidents and injuries that occurr with all to much regularity. I support the extention of the MTW application.

Hi,

I am writing to give my support for the extension of Mount Thorley Warkworth (MTW) Mining Operations. I live in singleton and I work in the coal washery at the mine and if the extension is not granted it is likely I will be made redundant and join the thousands of unemployed persons in the region. This will make it difficult to pay my mortgage and support my family.

MTW is not only important for my livelihood and my 1300 co-workers but supports the whole community. Recent layoffs from other operations in the Hunter are affecting the towns in the hunter like Singleton that all of a sudden have no work for residents and businesses are closing due to a lack of confidence in the future.

I believe MTW has completed all the necessary approvals to continue operating and hope the most recent application is approved so we can rest easy knowing we have a future to look forward to.

Thank you for considering my submission

My husband and close friends of ours work at Warkworth, we all have a young families. The closure of this mine would be disastrous for many young families in the singleton area, the result would be the majority of the local and surrounding communities having to pack up and move, this would not only be disastrous for the individuals but even more so on the local communities and businesses that rely on our money and support to keep them going. Shutting Warkworth the leading producer of Coal in NSW, one of the biggest money spinners in the area will ruin more livelihoods than it will do good. I VOTE TO EXTEND THE MINING CONTRACT!!!

I personally work at Warkworth and have many friends who also work at Warkworth. We all enjoy our jobs and have young families who give much to the local and surrounding communities. The closure of this mine would be disastrous for many young families in the local and surrounding areas, the result would be see the majority of the current workers and their families of Warkworth having to pack up and move, this would not only be disastrous for the individuals but even more so on the local communities and businesses that rely on our money and support to keep them going. Historically in Australia mining has been a responsible and active contributor to the local areas they operate in. Not just for employment but in bringing services and industry into areas that would have not previously beneifited.
It would be a travesty and an injustice if this industry is not supported in the future and it starts with support for Mt Thorley Walkworth extension. If we want to see this country prosper and provide jobs and lifestyle for our kids and grandkids then we need support now.

I support the extension. All mines these days are under constant watch for doing the wrong thing with the enviroment and the neighbours. From what I have seen the new style of mining is trying to get less invasive to all. With a major focus on safety leading the way. The local community will only benift from having this mine in operation as the other local business all rely on the flow on work etc. The noise reduction scheme and the rehab that is currently underway is a massive improvement and seems to be a huge focus for the way the business operates. This to me is a win for all involved.

I believe if this approval and extension does not proceed it will not only risk the employement of 1300 people plus supporting industries, it will also signal to the investment community that it is too hard to undertake investment in mining business in NSW. Investors will put their money elsewhere and possibly offshore, this will then risk Australia's earnings, more jobs and lifestyle..

The MTW extension needs approval to keep many workers in a job and boost the local economy. Without the extension approval, many of us will join the hundreds of people already laid-off in the coal industry. How will our families make ends meet with no work? For minimal addititional social and environmental impact, we can help sustain the economy, and thousands of families security.
