Enforcements

On 22 June 2023, NSW Planning issued an Official Caution to Warkworth Mining Ltd (WML) for exceeded noise impact assessment criteria at three noise monitoring locations for the Warkworth Continuation Project on 20 July 2022.  WML had failed to implement their approved Noise Management Plan on the night of 20 July 2022 in the lead up to the exceedances. WML have since implemented measures to ensure compliance with their management plan and NSW Planningcontinues to monitor WML's noise reporting data and implementation of the NMP.

With three generations of family currently living in the area, I wish to strongly object to the submission of the expansion. Bulga might be a small community of large and small land holders, but that gives no reason why your mine can encroach on Bulga and jeopardise its existence. Bulga is full of so much history with more still being made by my family as one example. My family's farm is very well-known, even currently being filmed for an Australian movie. Bulga is such a nice area that I bought myself a 100 acre block here to start my own farm which I hope to never sell. Farmers have to exist in this world too, or we will be looking at a world with no Australian food in our local supermarkets. Singleton used to be known for its dairy farming, now we see more deserted dairies on mine owned land than we do owned and operating dairies.

My husband was fortunate enough to gain a position at Mount Thorley 18 years ago. In the last 18 years we have been very grateful for the security of a full time job with great opportunity.
His brother, best mate, and our son in law work at Mount Thorley Warkworth now also. Our newphew and our son both have done their apprenticeships with the company and are now working full time elsewhere. Thanks to MTW.
The effect on our family will be enormous if the mine has to close.

I run a small bookkeeping business & the impact that the mining downturn has had on small business has been devastating. Add to this the closure of MTW and the impact on Singleton & surrounding areas will be a ripple effect. This will not only effect the 1300 mine workers but it will impact the staff at the local IGA, the number of teachers in the schools, the future employment opportunities of all children in the area and every business that a mine worker visits each week to spend their pay.

Please keep Mount Thorley Warkworth open. Not just for my sake but for the 1300 workers, their families and for all the small businesses that rely on the mine so they to can employ workers as well.

I have been employed at mount thorley warkworth now for three years. My family of five ( My partner, a four year old and twins aged two and myself) are currently living in Branxton. I am the sole incomer earner for my family and rely on Mount thorley warkworth to provide for them. I am all for the Extension being approved as i believe this can have a great spin off on the comunity, eg goods and services right through the region, which has to be a positive. take this away and i think there could be big consequences for the comunity, job losses ,bussiness going under, people leaving the area would be a great loss for the hunter region.
My family rely very much on the extension being approved. I would like to continue my minning career right here where i first started it and would like to continue into the future..

I am supporting the extention of the mine as a worker on site. I have moved to the area and have bought a house to provide for my family within the hunter valley, i am new to mining but want to have a long future within the mining industry in the hunter valley. I am the sole provider for my family and this job is vital to my family. Im not sure what i will do without this job. The site provides money to our community for sporting fields and a variety of community facilities. i believe the mining industry is vital to the hunter valley and australia.

Im all forward for the extension to be approved as Australia will depend on the coal industry in the near future we need safe and secure jobs for us workers and our children The Mounthorly Warkworth extension should be approved as 1300 jobs hang in the balance of this mine site . the effect on the sourounding communitys will be enormous .it will not nly effect the towns in the area but it will affect the Australian aconomy as more mines get shut down australians minerals will go to waste
in the future coming.

I am a local here in Singleton for many years and I would like to support the extention and continuation of Mount Thorley Warkworth. At present if you travel around our town you will find business which have been in our town for many years are now closing down eg: Betta Electricial - due to job losses around the mining industries our small business can not survive. I ask you to take in to consideration that this approval will effect many people. Dont let our town die. Help us to support the mining industries, small business, school etc.

I fully support the application to expand and continue mining at MTW. As a local to Singleton and with family working at MTW and other mines in the area i know how important this application is for the jobs of all those employed at MTW and and for the economy of the area, a huge number of businesses rely on MTW and the mining industry in general for work. We are already seeing the impact of the mining downturn in Singleton with businesses closing, jobs lost, investment in housing slowing etc.
Thank You.

Without an extension to MTW I am in danger of becoming unemployed by the end of the year. This would make it very hard to pay my bills and mortgage and maintain a comfortable lifestyle for my family. There are already a couple of thousand miners and tradesmen who have already lost their jobs. By keeping Warkworth going it will not only keep me employed but possibly create some more jobs for these umployed workers who are finding times tough at the moment. And also keep the many small businesses who feed of this mine continue to operate.

As a resident of Singleton and employee of Coal and Allied I strongly support the application. Having worked in various mining operations across Australia I can vouch that there are few that can match the level of environmental management employed at MTW. The entire leadership team is acutely aware of the need to achieve the high standards set for environmental compliance in order to run a sustainable business and is committed to industry leading standards. There are many examples of leading practice including noise monitoring and management systems, dust and blast fume management, rehabilitation quality and cultural heritage management. This is not to say that this mine is without its impacts. By their nature all mines have impacts and for MTW these are well known and documented and demonstrated to be within acceptable limits. I implore the Department and the Planning Assessment Commission to assess the impacts and mitigation commitments objectively. It's my opinion that an objective assessment can only conclude that the positive outcomes from this project significantly outweigh the negative impacts for the Singleton shire and the NSW population more generally. Without the approval the company will in all likelihood start planning for closure. For a mine that has operated for more than 30 years, with a large resource to continue mining for at least another 30, a premature closure driven by a subjective assessment would be a devastating and regrettable outcome.

I wish to object to the submission of expansion for the Rio Tinto mines. All of the media releases saying ' we neeed to protect the jobs of your employees' etc.... well what about our land, we worked hard to buy and build the properties we have in this area. The mine expansion will decrease the values of our land that we put so much into. And for those who want to stay, we have to put up with the ungodly sight of the OC mine creeping closer to our homes, the roaring noise and night along with the clunking of dozer tracks. Its sad that you think so little of the small people that saved big to buy their farms to help in their own way to add to Australias economic growth. Please stop!
